What BHP are CT20b's good for??

Post by karldavies »

My CT26 on my Rev1 has died so I'm thinking I might as well upgrade to a CT20b. Whats the maximum bhp i could get out of the turbo? Is it around 300bhp? Obviously i would need supporting parts for the rest of the car to get it up to that.

I hear it boosts well right up to the redline as aposed to 5k rpm like the 26. Is this true? Whats the lag on it like compared to the 26?

Cheers

mine didn't have any lag, was running 1.15 bar with very good response..., power wise realistically i would say around 280/290 bhp max although on the odd occasion a mr2 has been known to get into the 300 bhp area...

would also depend on engine condition and also if you were running an after market ecu...

Good for UP to 320bhp when really pushed. Spins up as quick as a CT26. The difference is absolutely tiny. CT26 has ceramic blades and steel shaft, the CT20 has the opposite. Great turbo but if those ceramic bits break...engine gone

I made 285hp on 0.9 bar(tailed off in high revs) on a CT20b a couple of weeks ago. Now running a stable 1bar with a Blitz EBC and I have a chargecooler to go on.

I'd expect to crack the 300 mark once the CC is on.

Hmmm this got me a bit worried... are the CT20b turbos known to break easily? :P Running stock boost and rarely hit 6k rpm but I normally shift at 5.

IMO the ct20b on my car was getting pretty tired so I bit the bullet and decided to change it before it failed. Had about 120,000 miles on the clock. Dont know if it was the orginal turbo, but the car had 40,000 miles on the clock when I got it. (tacho is still in km and I did the miles conversion).

When deciding what to replace it with, I went for a ct26 hybrid and my car got a huge performance increase on stock boost without changing anything else... dunno what bhp it is making as I have never had it on a dyno.

Might have been cheaper to put my car on the dyno with the old turbo to see how tired it really was, but I didnt and I am happy with the hybrid performance for a daily runner.

Is it rue they they will only hold upto 5k on the rev meter??? If so that means that my old rev2 tubby (only sold today) had some sort of hybrid turbo, as was suspected, as it held boost right the way up the rev range.......hmm... :-k

not sure about that.. i think both turbos have steel wheel and ceramic shafts. unless u get a ct20 from a st205 which has a steel shaft.

I have new replacement all steel shaft and wheels for the CT20B.
The reason the shaft breaks is that it is a smaller dia than the CT26.

With a ct20b on a stock rev 2 motor running a CC and 540's with a Aussie DP and HKS hi-power exhaust I made 272bhp at the hubs mapped on a PFC....

Pretty good suppose that's about 290 at the fly.

Still have the full setup in my garage on a stand, only pulled the engine for my rebuilt forged motor.

Well I picked up a CT20b a few days ago. 48k miles on it, very good condition, no play etc for £200

Will be looking for some 540 injectors, got the down pipe on. Just need an exhaust, ecu and then get it mapped.

Anyone know where i can get an avc-r cheapish? Going to put the rev3 wiring loom in it so will need one which supports that as well.(rather than the rev1 loom)

Thanks in advance
