Goodyear Eagle F1 miss-shaped

Post by 4age »

I have mk3 alloys on my mr2 mk1, and about 18 months ago I had brand new eagle f1's fitted all round, 195/50/15.
I have only done about 8000 miles since having them fitted and looking at the tread they only look just over half worn.
All of a sudden recently the car developed serious vibration through the steering wheel at about 65 mph so I took it in and had all the wheels balanced a 4 wheel alignment.
Problem is as soon as the tyre guy put them on the balancing machine and spun them up he said they were out of shape, and looking at them on the machine it looked as if they were bouncing up and down. All 4 tyres were the same, and even thou they have been balanced the car albeit not as bad as before still vibrates around the 65mph.
Anyone else had this problem and do you think it's worth me contacting goodyear?
P.s these tyres were made in Germany and not the supposedly the cheaper ones made in china.

Sounds odd.
Have you left the car standing for a long period of time? Or had it sitting on a flat tyre ever?
Either that or they could have been fitted incorrectly/lazily in the first instance.
Each tyre gets inspected and has to pass QC so I'd imagine that it's either something you've done (as it suddenly went bad) or they were stored improperly prior to sale. If you've had them 18 months and they used to be fine, I'd doubt there's much room for comeback to be honest. Time for new tyres?

I went through two sets of F1s on my MK3 Roadster alloys. The rears ran out about 3-4k miles before the fronts, but I never had a problem with mine. Mine lasted approx 15k on the rear and 18-19k on the fronts.

Not your ball joints or suspension related is it? Does it vibrate when you brake?

if theyve sat for a while then thats your problem, they flat spot over time, all tyres do. in as little as a few months sometimes, depending on pressures. some people stick the maximum pressure in their tyres when storing or parking cars for long periods as it keeps the shape better. too long outdoors and rubber perishes as well though if its not being used.

If all four were the same, could it be that the machine was out of kilter? Seems odd that all four would misshape, unless as stated it has been left standing.

Well it dosen't get a huge amount of use,but it's used at least once a week, maybe only 20 miles or so.
Prior to that the longest has been a fortnight when I went on hols, so no long term standing.

most tyre places do their balancing with the "round up" function switched on. some places call it different things, but is basically means that their wheel balancer rounds up the weights to make their lives easy. it ultimately results in less accurate balancing though. get them to switch it off and it can make a major difference. vibrations can magically disappear. some places wont do it or charge more, if thats the case then dont use them because a lazy tyre fitter is a dangerous one.

The company who fitted and did the balancing are a superb firm, they fit all the tyres to the local police force cars and their fitters know their stuff. I was chatting to the guy as he was doing the tyres and he actually showed me what the problem was and did pre warn me that they might not balance up properly. When you looked closely at the the top of the tyre from the side when it was turning on the machine it looked as if it was bobbing up and down.
Having had a quick scout round the web there seems to be a few other people with similar problems.

I've had F1's on my MK3 wheels for the last 4 years, it sits for 3 weeks at a time when I'm at work, never had any problems with the tyres at all. and TBH I've never heard of anyone having this problem with F1's.
