Checking out my brakes - what to look for

Post by leewaring »

I'm taking the rear calipers off today as I'm sure the drivers rear needs replacing. What should I be looking for in terms of wear? I know the piston seals could be split. What else should I be looking for?

Also any thing else to look out for while i've got my head in there?

Thanks for your help! :thumleft:

Check all the rubber gaitors are in good condition and that the slider pins are free from dust/dirt and are well greased when you put them back, this is what causes most calipers to stick.

Also i cleaned my calipers of all the rust and crud that had accumulated. I used a wire brush and some sand paper, but be careful not to snag the rubber gaitors.

Finally it's just the obvious looks and checks. Check the back of the discs (mine looked fine from the front but were really badley pitted on the back) and check the brake pipes for leaks etc.

Thanks for the advice!

Checked them over and one needs taking off and re-greasing etc, and found a split on the piston rubber #-o . The other didn't look too bad, no splits and slid freely.
