Just a Wii question

I have set up the Wii after a long time of not using it.
It's my GF's anyway but she bought it 2nd hand without instructions.

Anyhoo....I plugged it all in ok only to find that the hand triggers aren't working.
Checked with new batteries, checked the signal receiver was plugged in all ok. Pressed the little red button on the inside of the hand control where the batteries go.
Nothing.....dead as a dodo....no arrow on the screen or anything.

Any advice?
