[Mk2] [NA] possible alternator problem?

Post by willydc26 »

today when i started the mr2, it started a little slow, but just thought it was because it hadnt been driven in a while. i turned on the stereo and it played a bit, but then died. because its a home install, i thought a wire was just loose, because it kept flickering on and off. we started down the road and everything seemed fine. when i turned on my blinkers, i noticed that my tachometer started to jump with each click of the blinker. thats when i started to check the dash, no idiot lights came on, but the battery was showing a few dashes into the dashed lines, out of the solid. i slowed down to do a u-turn and thats when the car died. i tried restarting, but nothing happened. now it sits on the side of the road down the street.

a little background. my wife says she started the car just fine yesterday. the engine was recently out for a clutch change. the speedometer hasnt worked since the engine was put back in, is this related to the alternator? the hazards indicated inside the car, but not outside. the alternator belt wasnt broken. the windows still roll up, but slowly.

is there anything i need to check? is there a sure diagnosis for this? if so, does anyone have the parts i am going to need? thanks for the help.

Sounds like a knackered battery.

Get the battery tested, fully charged, refitted then check charging voltage at the battery and straight from the alternator.

Report back once battery is checked and charge voltages checked.

get it running (jump/push start)and check the voltage across the batt terminals ,started/running it should b about 14-14.5v .if its not started its just the battery power ure measuring and the batt will prob b ran down if the alternator is goosed and not charging .so get it running and if its not as above its most likely your alternator  (btw its an akward job) :thumleft:

i dont know anywhere in my area that will test batteries, but i borrowed a battery charger from a friend. i took the battery out and charged it for several hours, and finally got a full charge light on the charger.

if i install the battery and get it running, will i just be able to watch the voltage gauge on the dash to watch the car die as it just sits there? how long will the car take to die if its a bad alternator?

Mine lasted (on a brand new battery) 1 hr 23 minutes of driving with the stereo on, using indicaters and brakes etc... to give you some kind of idea

Just leaving it to idle will eventually remove all charge if the alternator is packed.

after some reading, it looks like it may have been a blown ecu/ig fuse in the engine compartment fuse box.

Also get it back to the place that did your clutch to fix the speedometer since they broke it :thumleft:

Did you buy yourself a voltmeter and test across the terminals?

Id also check the alternator belt and the plug (give it a little wiggle and check that no earth wires have been removed around that area
