I've read that some unscrupulous souls bung a load of toluene in with the petrol to achieve an MOT pass. I couldn't possibly condone such disgracefull behaviour. Toluene is available in 5 litre cans from your local car paint shop.

Dave, not sure if this is helpful or not as I am just re-embarking on the costs of running an old car.

I spent the first part of this year putting someone elses project back together to get some fun out of it this summer. Countless posts on here, multiple visits to Toyota and other motor factors, the money has just poured out. Having had a company car for the last few years, I forgot how expensive old cars are.

I wanted to jack it in a couple of times but persevered and got it running and it was really worth it. Put a smile on my face that I haven't had since my company gave me a Ford FUCKUS. Within a week, the gearbox went. Really f**ked me off and thought about selling it up. Decided to get back on the horse and now have the box out and am plowing more cash in on second hand parts. I know it'll be worth it in the long run.

Sorry, I'm rambling now, but what I'm trying to say is, you've done most of the hard work (from what I know of your car) and to give up over this would be crazy. A new reflector, some fuel cleaner and a more lenient MOT tester and maybe consider getting a new alternator, at least then you have a guarantee, thing with second hand parts is, they still come from a 10-15 year old car, but one you know nothing about.

Anyway, I know not of your working circumstances and financial situation. But each to their own, if I were you I'd stick with it :thumleft:

As mentioned by marf.
I got through emissions by the skin of my teeth after putting in some prolong mpg liquid. Got it off eBay bout £8.

Point to note I didn't actually fail any mot, I took the car in for just an emissions test initially and it didn't do great. Namely down to the amount of fuel needed to keep my car ticking over due to the crazy cam setup being so retarded and advanced. Week later went for it's actual mot, and passed.

Get the prolong stuff, seemed to work for me.
(I took the car to a more car friendly place btw, not the same place that did my emissions, purely cause if there was something wrong I could leave my car with Kent car craft).

Being a car that doesn't require a full cat test, you should get through no problems!! I asume they know you only need to pass the initial emissions test.

Alot of people on that thread said the engine was goosed to be kicking out emissions like that. Then me driving up to silverstone the next day from Kent proved it wasn't, LOL. (I knew it wasn't anyway, just down to fueling and cam setup).

They is no way you can break this car!! Especially after the recent beasty setup! Get some cheap uk sidelights off eBay. Borrow an exhaust bung maybe and pop some of that prolong stuff in. Job done, ENJOY for another year!

Dont You Frakking Dare Munnsy or i will come up there and slap you! :oldtongue:

Seriously though Stop buying xxxx Alternators go and buy a proper Rev3 one!

Get the headlights changed

The MOT center should put you through a Non cat test as the book wont have a SW20 with a 3S-GTE combination. As long as the car is an import and pre 95 your fine.

speak to Ryan about the Mapping for the Emissions. :thumleft:

i wouldnt break the car over a couple of 50p uk lenses and an alternator
(although i have heard that the SW20 was built around the alternator  )

when an MOT station does the emmissions test (providing the cars pre august '95) you have to fail the first test then the machine will allow the test to be deferred to the second stage which has a really high limit virtually unfailable, this is the non-cat test.

find another mot station. I use one in southampton guy's alright he explained how it works to me.

On a serious note though if you're thinking about breaking the car everytime a problem crops up then you're probably best off getting rid.

Im taking a leaf out of the RX-7 owners book and stashing away a rebuild fund, for when it happens (not if) :thumleft:

Dont get rid you'll be bound to regret it. Just look at how many members on here have sold MR2s bought something else and then hankered after a 2 again.

However if you do break it first dibs on the wheels!

If you want rid of the car then please sell it, don't break it. So many good MR2's getting broken these days.

I would have thought members of an owners club would be the least likely to break a car, and be wanting to keep as many of the cars on the road a possible.

Hope you decide to keep the car and get the problems sorted, as if you love the car when it's working, you'll probably regret getting rid.

trust me if i was to break it would only ever due to be for financial reasons, as im sure is the case for all forum members.
The problem is i would never get close to what it owes me, so breaking it would be the only way i could claw back ateleast half of it.

As for wether im keeping it or not, i have finshed my little hissy fit and decided that i would miss it so so much.
I have already sorted alternator out, and bought some indicators so just need to now either find a garage local or further afield to sort out my emissions ](*,)

The problem i have, is whenever anything goes wrong, it all goes wrong at once and thats what gets me down, but as usual you guys have picked me up given me a beaten and told me to get me act together
So ill soldier on and sort her out :thumleft:

If anyone knows of anyone local to me who can bend the rules a bit please let me know

Cheers for all your help and advice guys
