what would cause wobbly steering?

Post by Stushine »

what would cause this, its a bit weird to expalin, but basically its sorta like the front wheels are unbalanced, but they are not.

over50mph the wheel shakes for like 2 seconds, goes back normal for about 5 seconds, shakes for 2 secs, back normal for 5 secs and so on..

im thinking maybe some bearing or something? but i really have no idea atm, any one had this problem before?

have you hit a kerb or something in the past, sounds like something may be damaged,suspension/track rod etc. or just something out of sync...

could be as simple as a 4 wheel alignment required to fix :-k

I've had this before, usually over 60 miles an hour. Usually its just that the car need tracked/balanced but an unevenly worn front tyre could also be the problem.

I've also heard that they improved the areodynamics with the REV2/3 lower deeper splitter as it was better at higher speeds. But this would only apply if you have a REV1.

Check your tyres first, and if they look ok get it balanced I'd say. Better to do the least expensive things first before you look into suspension issues.

Check:

- wheel nuts are tight?
- tyres have no bulges, flat spots, uneven wear?
- wheels are balanced and straight?
- is the wheel alignment correct?
- do you have after market wheels? If so do you need hub centre spacers?
- do you feel it through the brake pedal on braking? If so maybe a warped disc?
- possibly a siezed caliper- do the pistons go back in easily? Are the slider assemblies corroded and sticking?
- steering track rod ends- is there excessive play? Check the ball joints for wear too?
- wheel bearings- jack up the car, lock the steering then pull the wheel top and bottom , and then side to side to check for excessive play?

My guess from what you've said would be loose wheel nuts, seized caliper, lower ball joint or steering member worn.

Good luck- should be easy enough to find :thumleft:

cheers for that list dude i will check it all tomorrow, ive jus bought it today, checked wheel nuts they are fine.

ive noticed when on bumpy roads u can hear a light tapping noise, my van made the same noise as this when the track rod ends were shot. however, the MR2 just passed an MOT last week before i bough it :-k

While you're under there check the ARB drop links- may explain the knocking.

Let us know how you get one :thumleft:

Other option could be low tyre pressure. My fronts had dropped to about 15psi and it wasn't visible due to tyre/wheel combo. I had a lot of virbration in the steering wheel at speed. Pumped the tyres up properly and it was sorted.
