How much leg room in MK1

Post by CJ B »

Hi!
I originally bought my tubby as a winter runaround / trackday car but in all honesty - nice as it is - I dont think it suits for my purposes.
I am considering a MK1 as I currently pay too much insurance & fuel to use it as a second car. Also having never done trackdays before I doubt if a turbo is the right way to start.
My main concern is the legroom. I am 6'5 and 18 stone (I know I'll never break any lap records - maybe just the suspension :P ), will I fit into a MK1?
If there are any vertically challenged MK1 owners out there could you let me know.

Cheers,
Chris.

Let me know if you want to pop round my gaff and try having a sit in one of mine.

Its no problem and I am only in Barnton.

you should fit in a mk1 but it will be a bit tight under the steering wheel.the great thing is as a second car you can get it insured under classic insurance, with a mileage limit of say 5000 you should find it around £150.

I have a Mk1 and am just over 6 foot. I've had to change my wheel for a 300mm one so I can fit and if I go over a slight bump in the road, I need to remember to duck. Mine is a sunroof model.

I'm now looking to race my car and I'm hoping that a set of race seat will give me the extra space I need for my lid.

I'm 6ft 4in (13 stone tho) and fit very comfortably in my Mk1, I do have a slightly smaller steering wheel which helps things a bit. I have to take the drivers side T-top out for track days as I don't fit very well with a helmet on!

Possibly the only person I've ever heard of that buys a tubby for the winter

..the only thing I can promise for sure is slow progress.

just have this niggling thought that if I rip out the wiring, then the car will never get out of the garage again.

Still in the garage...

Fair enough, now it becomes clear.

I'm 6'3 and the only problem is with headroom while wearing helmet, otherwise there is enough room.

I'm 6'2" and 15 stone, and I only just fit in my mk1. Headroom isn't too bad, but clearance between the wheel and my left leg is.

I'll stick a smaller wheel on there at some point, that should sort it out.

I really think you'll struggle at 6'5" - give it a try though, you might fit :)

I tried on a lovely SC for size tonight thanks to WaynesToyotaMR2 unfortunatley I didnt fit - I just managed to squeeze in but there was no headroom and no way on earth I could of operated the foot pedals.
I guess the tubby stays.

Thanks Wayne!
