Battery not charging...

Post by ricomr2 »

Before I go down the route of changing the alternator, (battery is fine) I'm just wondering if there are any other common reasons for the battery not charging?
No battery light on when the car is running though it was flickering on and off at one point along with the light with the picture of a fan on it. (engine bay cooling fan I believe)

Drive belt is intact and appears to be tight enough and in good condition.

The only odd thing is the voltmeter in the dash was erratic in its readings, one minute it would read normal
(high 12-13v) the next it would drop way down to under 10v then back up again.

Also, dont know if this is related but the auto choke doesnt appear to be operating.
normally when the car is started from cold, I can hear the induction kit really sucking the air in till its warm, then it dies right down.
Its not doing that now and the no high idle either when the cars starts from cold.

Car is a rev 2 n/a

Any help much appreciated, I want to try sort it out over the weekend.

I had a similar issue and a lot of other people have as well

on the alternator there are three wires ,one is yellow and black ,
this wire can break somewhere in line, and give the symptoms that the alternator is shot
all three wires should have around 11+ volts with ignition on
check this first before changing the alternator ,i did (eventually ) and this was my problem ,so easy fix in the end ](*,)

if you do a search the same answer will show up

also i had a problem with loose battery terminals that worked loose gave me same sort of symptoms, tried to tighten them up but wouldnt ended up filing down battery terminal to take of the smoothness and it worked been ok ever since. :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:
she's all comming together nicely now after a fair bit of cash spent, not bad for just an n/a now for some body kit i think.

And check the ECU-IG fuse... a faulty reverse light switch will blow this and the car won't charge. ](*,)

Its got me baffled!
Went out to it at the weekend and had to jump start the car, the odd thing is, it started charging again!
Had the car running for a good 15 mins, lights on and using a current tester to make sure it was holding charge, which it was.
Eventually took the car a short drive and it was still charging but the 3 warning lights would flash every so often. So who knows??!
