My Nurburgring trip 30/05/09 - 01/06/09

Post by Wingers »

Just thought I'd put a quick post up as I'm planning to head over to the Nurburgring for a few days and wondered if anyone else was gonna be there in a 2.

Dates are:
31 May 2009 - 1st June 2009

The circuit is open Sat afternoon, all day Sun and all day Mon so I'm probably gonna stay there throughout and come back Tuesday.

Anyway - let me know if you think you're gonna be there...

I'm not going either now :(
I don't think my car will be ready in time and it's still too loud at the moment.

Some of my work mates are going but I don't want to spend that much money unless everything is sorted first.

Oh well, maybe August instead...

I'm looking at doing a trip later in the year too. I'll keep my eye out for dates :thumleft:

When I went last year it was in a group of three standard cars that weren’t loud (not MR2’s) so there was no issue. I also saw no-one testing any of the cars that were going out but it was October so not as busy. I’ve heard plenty of other stories from ppl saying that they saw lots of cars being refused access if they were over 95dB.

My car is currently too loud as it’s running a screamer pipe. I recorded a drive-by of 110dB when I tested it a few weeks/months ago.
I’ve now got a non-screamer pipe on the way which should bring it down to something sensible. I don’t know exactly what yet though.

As far as a future trip goes - I had a look through the ring-calendar and August weekends seem like the next best time.
It’ll be very busy (so potential for lots of yellow flags / track closures) but it’s open all weekend (and the Monday iirc). By the time we’ve got all the way there I think it’s worth staying for 3 days.

I’ll post details of any future trips I’m hoping to go on – be good to get a few other 2s along as well :)

Thing is, sound tests wont be done with the screamer pipe in action.

I do intend to get a secondary downpipe with a replumbed dump tube though, just incase. Was my main reason for going v-band on the turbo.

That’s true but there are plenty of marshals out and about and I think being so far above the noise limit is pushing my luck a bit.
I read somewhere that 110dB was as loud as “A car horn”. I then tried a quick test and sure enough I can’t hear my own horn if I’m at full boost and using the screamer pipe

If I can pass a static test at 95dB (3/4 of redline), and keep the drive-by to under 100dB then I’d expect to get away with it.

Think you'll be hard pushed to get those levels on a tuned MR.

What exhaust system are you running?

Departure II.

When I did the testing I had a blown flexi section so I know that was making it worse. I’ve since replaced that (and found that the back box is leaking slightly too) but it’s not that much quieter – I don’t know exactly what it’s running now but, it’s still too loud for trackdays imo.

The strange thing is that I thought they were generally known as being fairly quiet.
Mine isn't, but I'm a bit confused by that - I wouldn't use it as a benchmark though as I think I may be the exception, not the rule...

I know you're not far from me so I should be able to get hold of a proper sound level meter at work if you want to check yours.
Bear in mind that I am mid twenties now though so I may have retired by the time your car is fixed :eye:

haha yeah the illusive "car" that I'm meant to own

Appreciate the offer and will no doubt take you up on it. Will need to have a visual display of dB though as we'll probs have hearing aids by then

Northloop.co.uk is a great forum for Nurburgring discussions.

This is the official site if you want to check the dates:
http://www.nuerburgring.de/index.php?id=10

You want to look for anything that says touristfahren as that’s when it’s open to the general public.
