Fensport Superchip Instructions

Post by SuperRedMR2 »

I have just bought a superchip off of ebay for a tidy sum of £61. Is there any manuals that anyone can supply me with so I can install it?

Whats the difference between the Superchips ICON or the Unichip Dastek ?

ICON provides a fixed ignition advance map so is 'off the shelf' plug & play - it fools the ECU into more ig. advance. Unichip provides fuel & ignition mapping, though once again it is a piggyback so fools the factory ECU.

From what I recall the superchips is as simple as red to 12V switched, black to ground, then yellow and yellow/black fit between ECU RPM signal I think yellow/black is the modified signal but don't quote me.

yep Dastek Unichip requires mapping to your car on a dyno.

makes quite a big difference only about 8-10hp but the drivability and economy went right up. :thumleft:

Ok, so I dont have to get my current ECU re-mapped for this chip? Coz that'd be a huge relief to my bank account!

So how does it adapt the settings of the current setup?

It doesn't unless you reprogram it.

I had one of these. If its the one specifically for an mr2 mk1 you've got, then it will be preprogrammed with a map to advance the ignition at different RPM points. Ive got a graph of it somewhere I had fitting instructions with mine and was very easy to fit and just mounted it in the boot behind the carpet where the ECU is. Just remembered I've got photos of the graph and fitting instructions on my photobucket. Copies are below if you werent given any. From what I've previously been told, it just advances the timing blindly without taking any other factors into account so is not ideal. You'll prob find you'll have to use higher octane superunleaded with it aswell to stop it from 'pinking'. This is what I had to do. Pinking can cause engine damage to so make sure it doesn't pink as mine did at times, I think it may have contributed to the headgasket going on mine which is why I sold it and went back to standard. Sorry that I seem to be putting a downer on this but just giving you my experience and what to be aware of...

Heres the graph:

The other thing to bear in mind is that there are significant differences in the ignition mapping (i.e. the stock mapping in the ECU) of the early mk1 MR2s compared to the later mk1b.

So it'd dodgy at best to simply expect this unit to work across all ECU revisions for the UK mk1 MR2.

Can the Superchip mapping be altered?

Also note that it doesn't look at the MAP sensor and this is a fairly basic requirement when optimising ignition timinig.
