How do i stop 'goose honk' and make standard dumpvalve louder??

Post by darrenmr2 »

As title guys. Have searched but cant find anything!

Rev 3 with a HKS filter (coming off VERY soon for an Apexi) and standard dumpvalve.

Want to keep standard dumpvalve on, and ive read somewhere about removing/blocking some pipes (??) to eliminate goose honk and also make the standard dumpvalve louder?? (But i cant remember or find where i have read it! )

Pics would be fantastic to visually show me what to do and which pipes to block, failing that a step by step! Thanks very much in advance guys

I've just pulled of the recirc pipe to the air filter. Now the standard dump valve vents to atmosphere! Sounds decent enough. Though I have heard that having the oem d/v venting to atmosphere doesnt do it much good (I read it here I think) hence why a ssqv will be on soon...

If you want to try it out you need to find the pipe that goes from the oem dump valve to your airfilter.(recirc pipe) Remove the pipe at the air filter end and bung the air filter end with something. Now you should be left with the pipe coming off the dump valve but its not attached to anything. Now it should 'pppsstcch' (vent to atmosphere)

Thanks Dean, i think i know which pipe u mean (black pipe quite large in diameter that goes from the dump valve to the air filter?) What do you put on the end of the dump valve though then if the pipe is removed?? One of those little 'breather filters'? Any other thoughts guys?

you can buy bungs in the correct size but coke 500ml bottle screw caps fit for a ghetto temp fix to see how you get on with it.

IMHO the stock BOV venting to atmosphere sounds like a bus air brake system and doesnt sound refined/tuned at all.

Hey Ben thanks for that...does it damage the dumpvalve as Dean said having it venting to atmosphere?? And what do i put on the end of the dumpvalve, breather filter? Cheers

it wont damage the dump valve having it Vent To Atmosphere (VTA) your MR2 is a rev3 so it runs off MAP (mass air pressure) instead of MAF (Mass air flow) like on the rev1-2s so you wont get the overfuelling problems which some rev1-2s have. I would keep an eye on ebay for Mr2 aftermarket dump valves like this one below as they have the proper adapter for the mr2.

Thanks Ben :D may give it a try and see how it sounds, esp if it gets rid of goose honk! Sorry to ask (again!) but if i remove the re-circ pipe and block the air filter off...what goes on the dump valve end?? Is it a little breather filter...or do i just leave it as it is with the pipe removed?? (but wont it spit little bits of oil out??)

I used to have a HKS filter on mine when i bought it and got a "goose honk" noise.

This was all sorted when i got the Apexi. So hopefully when you get yours it may fix the noise.

As for the Dump valve noise why don't you get a deifferent bov that is designed to make a louder noise, i.e hks, greddy etc....

Hi David...yeah thats what i'll be looking for in the future...i just thought this may be a quick fix in the mean time! (eliminate goose honk with the HKS filter and make the standard dumpvalve slightly louder!) Do u know what goes on the dumpvalve after removing the recirc pipe?? :-k is it a little breather filter?

the goose honk is the VTV valve so if you keep the std BOV then you'll still get the honk. Whether you hear it above the apexi is another matter

Lol, lost count how many times you must have asked that with no answer! You dont need anything on the end mate, it wont be sucking any air in as such so doesn't need filtering. To be fair tho mate i'd splash out and get a decent BOV if thats the sound your after, standard sounds pants in my opinion, SSQV the way forward, plus you get an extra loud 'whoosing' sound with a proper BOV fitted. :thumleft:

LOL...thanks andy for the reply to the question i think i asked every time i posted ha ha \:D/ I will eventually get myself a non standard BOV, just dont have the money at the min so thought id give this a try! And if the standard dumpvalve doesnt need anything on it after removing the recirc pipe all i need is a coke cap to bung the air filter end with! :oldtongue:
