Side scoops

Post by speed »

Yes i've done the search thing and couldn't find much info. My car came with one of those scoops which fit in the side of the engine lid but its not been fitted coz i don't like the look and have not heard good things about them.

What i want to know is if the scoops which can be fitted by the side vents make much difference on a tubby. Also if something was fabricated to fit inside the side vent to direct air to a particular place would this help with performance and cooling compared to the normal set up.

Not even got the car yet, currently driving an n/a but i'm just getting a few ideas together so when i do mod the tubby it can all be done at once and i don't waste my time on useless mods.

people say the airflow was perfect when toyota desiged it so no need for the scoop on a turbo, but on the n/a's the scoop was connected to a special air box which gave good results so people say, cant remember the make of the airbox but im sure someone will name it on here, scoops are not loved by many people i love them and want a pair because thay look the dogs dangles :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:
she's all comming together nicely now after a fair bit of cash spent, not bad for just an n/a now for some body kit i think.

I'll only fit them if there is proven results, not gonna start just sticking random bits on the car, been down that road before...less is more as they say.

the airflow over these cars causes a vortex over the engine lid which pulls air up and out of the the engine.drawing the hot air out , so any down force on the airflow will disrupt this flo. disrupting the toyota designed cooling of the engine. as mr madbiker says there is scoops for the n/a which leads into the an induction air filter box that rams air into it thus adding a bit of cold air into the mix and ramming cold air into a n/a is always a good thing.

on a turbo however. you dont need this as you have a turbo ramming air in.

best thing you can do for a turbo for better cooling is intercooler or chargecooler, water injection or nos.

after that you could do better side mount air scoops. which will pull more air in , or go for boot mount intercooler with associated mods.

It was the side mount air scoops that i was referring to. I'll be doing the other cooling mods but will want to get all bodywork done at the same time which is why i'm researching stuff now.

Side scoops seem to work... Believe me, the amount of muck in the engine bay has trebled. :?

i had some side scoop vents on my n/a . they made a noticeable difference i thought. i wouldnt bother doing this to a turbo though.

i have border side vents on mine and think they are def worth it on a turbo more so than an N/A as engine bay temps are alot more on a tubby,i also have the toms side scoop on N/S high speed you can hear it humming as the air goes in cant say whether it aids cooling or not though

It does help with intake temps... although the turbo may pull the air in and drive it to the engine... those still with sidemount intercooler will benefit in more air being driven to the sidevents....

I've seen noticable differences in fitment of these..... reduced engine intake temps as a result of more effective intercooling !
