Decent picture from a PS2 on an LCD ?

Post by JohnnyC »

As title really, I've got my old PS2 connected to a 22" LCD via scart.

Obviously it's not going to be perfect as the TV has to scale the PS2's 640x480 (or whatever) to the LCDs 1680x1050 - but the picture I get is terribly blurry 8-[

I know the TV can do a decent job at scaling, as the Wii (roughly 640x480 also) looked pretty decent when that was connected via scart (now using components).

Only thing I can think of to improve things would be getting a lead that use RGB through the scart (need to check if they even exist...) :-k

What gives? It's very bad
Someone must've hooked up their PS2 to an LCD ?

Must be your LCD as my PS2 was fine on my samsung T240HD. Wouldnt work on my 50" panny plasma though, the screen was just too big and went all blocky.

You can get a component cable for the PS2, this will give 480p for supported games.

As I said, the Wii which has similar resolution, looked superb (bit of ghosting though).

It seems RGB scart leads are available for the PS2.
But I think the difficult bit will be getting one that *really* uses an RGB signal and not just the standard composite (which puts buying from fleabay out of the picture)

yup, get a component lead for it, will look pretty good.

just remember if you do get an RGB or component for it, set it up on the console boot menu otherwise it's money down the drain :)

Can't get component, as I bought component leads for the Wii, and I can't be swapping them over each time

Don't recall seeing any video setup options on the PS2 menus :-k
(unless it detects you've got RGB leads and opens up some options - like the Wii does when it 'knows' you got components plugged in)

The more reading I do, the worse it gets.

Component leads won't allow you to play PS1 games? (sounds right, I had problems with components on the Wii when playing virtual console games)

RGB scart gives a green picture when watching DVDs ](*,)

I bought the Sony component cable for the PS2 hoping to get a better pic when i got a HD TV and my TV says screen mode unsupported when i change the PS2 output mode to component #-o Wasn't impressed but after doing a quick google search it seems i wasn't the only one and certain makes of HD TV's all say the same thing.

Update to this, after looking at old PS1 RGB scart leads, they looked familiar so I must have one somewhere - dug it out and...

The picture quality is MUCH better, but there's a couple of problems.

Firstly, the colours aren't correct - the whole screen has a very light purple look to it - old knackered lead? (although a look on wikipedia a while back revealed different specs for RGB, think it was mostly European vs US differences).

Secondly, when you switch AV on the TV to view the TV programmes - errr, you can't, it still displays the PS2 ](*,) As soon as you switch the PS2 off then it shows the programmes!!! If I switch back to composite scart then all is fine. TBH this sounds more like a 'bug' in the TV :-k

How sure are you about this?
As a test on the above PS1 RGB lead, I plugged it into my PS3 and got no picture at all.

I used to have my PS2 connected to a Hitachi through RGB and if the PS2 was on thats all you could view on the TV no-matter what channel you changed it too. Teletext worked but you still had the PS2 in the background making it kind of funky but impossible to read.
