What can compare to the mr2

Post by speed »

In a couple of months i plan on puchasing a mk2 turbo, spending around 4k on it. Was just wondering whats out there which will give similar or better performance for around the same sort of money.

I want something i can keep for a good few years and will have plenty of power. Doesn't have to be all that practical as it will be used as a second car.

I went through the same thing myself not that long ago, and here's what I came up with:

200sx, RX-7, Scoob STi, M3 E36, Auto Supra Turbo, Celica GT4, Integra.

But then it totally depends on what you're after, I wouldn't outrule things like a Clio Williams, 106 Rallye etc. Not as much power, but awesome machines.

If its speed your after, then i think im right in saying that the mr2 is the best bang for buck.

Rev3-4-5 will run a 13.5 sec 1/4 mile on a perfect launch, which is up there with ferraris and some lambos.

I watched a Civic type-R with some mods and a good run only manage 16.2 sec 1/4 !

£500 chucked into a healthy Rev 3-4-5 will get you to 300 flywheel bhp and possibally down into the 12's.

Rev 1 & 2 are both very capable but rev1 lack updated brakes and suspension components, and both of them use the old and dated AFM air metering system -which means once you want to tune past the limits of the afm (which i think is about 280fwhp), you will need to purchase a standalone EMS or do a rev3 conversion -both of which can be costly.

I dont think any of them cars on malcster's list quite give a kick in the gut from acceleration like the mr2 does.

12s are easily a possability with that power, he's right. I had a mildly modded rev2 with ct26 running a 13.6, then a 13.1 with a ct20 and 16psi boost. With an 18psi run I would have got into the 12s but didn't want to risk blowing the thing up in york.

If you already have a MR2 Turbo then why not go for a MR2 V6 as a 2nd car \:D/

I currently have a rev 2 na and only had it for a month. Used to have a mk3 but have always preferred the look of the mk2. Pretty much decided to get myself a tubby as i love the way the 2 drives but just wanted to make sure there was nothing out there that i'd overlooked.

if ya could stretch your pennies a tiny bit, s2000 would be the upgrade for me. simply awsome. weight distribution doesn't feel too disimilar from a 2 either. :)

Like the s2000 but you're talking at least £8k for one. Just out of interest how does the performace of lets say a 2001 s2000 match up to that of a rev 5 tubby?

quite even on the straights, tubby getting a slightly quicker start from stand still. s2000 will still do it though.

but cornering is stupidly good. where the mr will snap when taken over the limit, the honda felt a fair bit more recoverable so it's to pull the backend into place.

look on autotrader, some good one's in between £5500 - £7000.

take one for a spin you'll like it. esp when ya take it to 9000rpm in 2nd. you'll like that. 8)
