[MK2] [Turbo] Oil consumption, where is it going???

Post by stealth »

Anyone got any idea where my oil is going? It's used over half the dipstick level in 100km

its a rev3 tubby

I cant see any leaks

The inlet manifold had a little oil in but was still very clean so I think the turbo seals are OK

It's now got an oil catch tank to ensure no oil is coming from the pcv, the catch tank is empty and all the breather pipes have been cleaned.

I've done a compression test with these results:-

1) 180
2) 183
3) 180
4) 180

So that's all OK

I haven't lost any power it runs fine.

No blue smoke

Any ideas or help would be appreciated

Did you measure it with the car in the same orientation each time? (e.g. 1st facing down a hill. 2nd facing up a hill) - just trying to eliminate the obvious!

Yeah I always check it first thing in the morning (so all the oil should be in the sump) and its always parked in the same place facing the same way.

no blue smoke on boost? any blue smoke on start up after leaving the car sitting for awhile? look above the downpipe for signs of an oil leak, I had to replace my rocker cover gasket as oil was dripping down the back, hitting the downpipe and burning off

Have you changed to a different oil recently? Maybe the oil you are using is too thin.

What grade of oil are you using. I dont like to use anything thinner than 10w40.

It could still be the turbo seals. Have you done a quick visual check on your exhaust? When the car is running are there oily deposits inside the exhaust?
You might want to try clean it up a bit and try again.

Unfortunately it might not be that easy to figure this out without taking
either the turbo or the exhaust off. The amount of oil consumed does kinda indicate turbo seals or some other fairly significant part.

It can be hard to see in daylight - go for a spin at night time, wait until you have headlights behind and nail it, you'll soon see if you have any/much smoke - shows up very clearly. (Be safe when doing it though obviously!)
Although some cars run rich and a little black smoke is normal, but that'd only be wispy.

using that miuch oil you would notice blue smoke, day or night.

now ive done this before, so dont bite my head off, but i've not pushed the dipstick in fully, and got a false reading. just a thought.
