Mk2 - wind noise from wing mirror / tweeter

I've done a search but can't find the info I'm looking for.

I'm getting wind noise from the wing mirror area. Initially I thought it may be that my window is not winding all the way up, but that's sorted now.

I've taped up the window to seal gap, got into the car through the passenger door but the wind noise is still there.

I've stuffed the space behind the tweeter cover with sponge, no difference.

There's no loose trim, no gaps, no indication of anything amiss.

Any ideas? The noise is driving me mad!

There is, but most repeat the same problem / solution and none are of any use.

JeffD suggested that the easiest way of fixing this is to replace the door mirror mount. They're not expensive (less than £30) from Toyota.

I've taped over all gaps around the window and wing mirror, got in via the passenger side, took the car for a drive, still the same.



I've taken the wind deflector off, no better.

All the trim looks fine.

Any ideas?

You haven't read the link I posted have you? The photos on page three from roadsterman show exactly where the velcro is placed. 2 quid fix.

I have read it, a number of times in fact (because it is so badly written).

The SOLUTION

Using velcro (the matted side - not the hook side) - This is glued on the outer side of the channel such that the matted side lies against the glass as the window is raised and lowered. The material has sufficient padding to fill the gap and doesn't create drag and won't affect the operation of the window.

He is suggesting to put the velcro here:



I've stuck a strip of very thick double sided sticky tape, with black insulation tape over the top, across the entire length of the seal. There are no gaps between the glass and the seal, but I still get wind noise.

Any other suggestions?

no - that is not where the velcro goes. Look at the photo again Only the roadmaster99 photo onpage 3. The other photos are wrong.

Lower your window. It is glued on the outer channel where the window slides such that the matted side will rub against the glass as the window rises.
It will be totally hidden once the velcro is glued into place

The most simple explanation is that I did not realise that there is more than one page to that post. Now having seen the photos on page 3, the initial explanation makes perfect sense.

I'm off to get some velcro.

One additional bit of advice:

Do not just stick on a piece of velcro the same length as the height of the triangle. Inevitably, despite being firmly stuck down, the velcro will eventually loosen and peel when the window is lifted. I know, it happened to me.

I recommend you buy a longer piece of velcro, about 700mm if I recall and stick it to the inside of the triangle, then press it against the inside of the door skin and eventually wrap it around the side impact protection bar. Job done.

I had a stupid amount of wind noise in mine, so last week I removed the triangular tweeter pods and filled the cavity left (containing the actual tweeter) with expanding sealant foam, and did the velcro trick and voila, a reduction in wind noise of about 80%.
