AE92 4AGZE in trouble

Post by Jack_Faust »

Hey all,

I have been very quiet for the past 2 years after getting my MR2 engine replaced with a transplanted AE92 4AGZE from Fensport. The reason is a lot has gone wrong with it and I have barely driven it since it has been installed. The elsectrics were all shot in the engine and needed an entire re-wire but it was an esoteric engine (eventually turned out to be from a Sprinter Trueno) so that took time and money.

It was all done and I was joyfully whizzing about in it for a month before something went in the engine (excuse my technical language, I am not very familiar with the mechanics!). Lost compression in a cylinder and need to get new pistons, conrods and a re-hone probably.

Can anyone recommend what sort of pistons\con rods I would need and where the best place to get them from would be?

Also there are 3 different sorts of spark plugs in it, can anyone recommend what sort\temp ones I should get as well.

I will be eternally grateful for any assistance given. :)

Get the pistons etc from Toyota. I don't see why you'd need to change the conrods.

Spark plug wise the AE92 with it's DLI setup uses different plugs from the AW11 GZE.

The only plugs you can get are from NGK I believe and these are platinum plugs at £15 a pop (when I bought them in 2001). They were ordered from in Germany IIRC. Sorry cannot remember the part numbers for them.

If you want access to the SC forum let me know.. think somebody may be able to help you over there.

Hey Lauren,

Thanks for the reply, Toyota won't let me have them without a VIN but hopefully I'll surmount that issue!

I haven't actually had the top off the engine yet so am going to arrange for that but the guy who did have a look said that conrods might be damaged.

What I do know is that it has lost compression in one cylinder and is making a very bad rattle and although it drives has no power and is very juddery.

Thanks for the reply and if access is not too much of an issue I would appreciate it please.

To be fair its going to be quicker and easier to pull the whole engine rather than try and take the head off in situ (which will potentially tell you nothing). Sounds like your going to have to crack the bottom end open so the few hours you will spend tugging the head, you could use dropping the engine which means you can then strip it in a hour or two and find out what’s wrong with it.

You could have holed a piston, cracked a ring land or dropped a rod. Any of those failures can spell the end of an engine or significant damage. However until it’s opened up its all guesswork.

I would also want to find out why it failed shortly after the conversion. You may fix it to find it happens again. I would also be speaking the Fensport as they did the conversion – but I guess your 2 years to late on that one.

Cheers
