Shattered impellar shaft

Post by WillyWonka »

Have just had turbo sent away to be rebuilt as impellar shaft snapped!

I'm obviously going to get the oil and filter changed due to the potential of metal filings being in it but is there anything else that needs cleaning/flushing out too? Also if so how to go about doing it?

When its all back together do I have to run the turbo in and if so for how long?

Sorry for the questions

Cheers

It's best to remove all the boost pipes and clean them out, including the intercooler. You don't want any small bit of metal no matter what size entering any part of your engine.

May be best to pull apart the inlet manifold aswell for a little piece of mind.

If theres any shattering taken place, it'll be on the turbine side and then most of it will have gone out of the exhaust.

Occassionally, the excess play causes the alloy compressor to catch the sides, at most, the metal fragments will have reached the intercooler... which is good really as it acts almost like a pee trap.

Inlet manifold to remove is a little over the top, not really needed as the turbo failure is simply the turbine snapping off the shaft... at most, have the intercooler flushed out.

Running in, well - there should be enough tolerance in the rebuild to take up expansion and contraction. Run the car on light load for around 200 miles, the important factor allowing it to heat up and cool down several times.. then your good for thrashing after.

Oil - you'll need two flushes.. stick some ordinary mineral oil in - Valvoline - great stuff, run it with a new filter for this period, then drop it out and replace it out with some more synthetic stuff.

You'd have to go through the heartache of removing it and flushing it with degreaser / brake cleaner - stripping the oil from the internals of the intercooler.

I personally think you won't need to go down this route. If the compressor has emitted any alloy shards, it'll been small enough to go through the engine alreally.

I'd just refit the new turbo, do a few oil changes and get the boost up again.
