AW11 drive shaft upgrades?

Post by aw11rally »

I am having numerous problems with drive shafts! the iner CV on the long side to be more accurate. I keep smashing them. First few also took the bellhousing with them. Bellhousing has been fine since we beefed up the rear torque/engine mount to bolt to the block and the diff housing.

My question is.....Is there a simple way to beef up the CV jonts / drive shafts on the AW11 n/a?

most recent break smashed a hole in the side of the cv cup! its messy.

also, vid from the SMC stages rally of my aw11 can be found at www.madvideo.co.uk , you cant miss it!

could you not use the gearbox out of an s/c or early mk2 turbo as id imagine they have larger diff bearings and therefore larger and stronger inner cvs?

If you want a SC gearbox - you can have my old one for free. Synchro on 3rd/4th need fixing but it had no pop out issues.

MODS - I hope this isn't classed as a FOR SALE thread as the item is free - feel free to move if it's a problem.

(Edited to say that I've promissed the box to SS2 now - sorry for the thread drift)

SC gearbox and shafts would probably be a good starting point as the SC uses an E series box rather than the C series (E series is also used in the mk2 so is generally better at handling higher loads).

Only thing to be aware of is that if you carry on breaking shafts you'll find SC ones a lot harder to get hold of.

I wonder if the Celica N/A supported drive shaft (93 gen 5) would be a plug and play. :-k

You'd need to make up a bracket to bolt to the block but that's not too difficult.

Worth a look.

dont realy want to ditch the box i've got, its had a lot of money spent on it, its short ratio (cant get the gearset anymore and it cost £1500 in 96) and has a lower crown wheel and pinion, oh and an LSD which now needs rebuilding (driving it on one drive shaft has worn out the plates, anyone know a good diff builder?).

I'm thinking of a hybrid, been chatting to some porsche racers and they seem to think cutting and shutting drive shafts is perfectly acceptable, sleeved and plug welded they will take as much power as u like, so think thats the route we will go (we need some extra length anyway).

My plan is as follows......subaru impreza inner cv (as a mate rallys one and has loads lying around) mated to the drive flange on my c50/51, standard aw11 outer cv. will make them up to give an extra inch in length as at 3deg negative camber on the cv was poping out!

we will see
