Nice pics, I've never really considered the idea of a MK1 as a rally car. How does it fair?

Out of interest, what exhaust system does it have on it?

And how much work goes into preping the car?

That looks pretty cool! Are you still on a standard 4age?

standard 4age? NO!

Post by aw11rally »

The engine was built by RMsport, this guy builds 240-260bhp formula atlantic spec NA 4age's for the irish rally boys. Our engine is running the standard 4age forged crank but with forged conrods and high comp pistons, high comp head gasket. ported and gas flowed big valve head with 300deg rally cams by piper and uprated valve train. twin weber 45 carbs on custom RM inlet manifold, modified distributor to allow manual adjustment of ignition timing. fully wrapped custom 4-2-1 exhaust manifold with just under 2in primaries, fully wrapped custom system by urban racing (asked for it to be quiet, light and v strong, it is braced all over the place and uses the silencer off a bentley, very unrestrictive but easily passes sound tests (about 98db at 4500). Had car on the rollers a few weeks ago before the northwest stages and managed 140bhp at 7500rpm at the wheels. The carb boffin thinks its about 165-170 at the flywheel. Throttle bodies are iminent, either R1 or 4age 20v depending which come out on top in the test mule (a 20k mile aw11 minter).

how does it fair?

my first rally was the northwest stages around blackpool. its a very tough rally and we managed to smash the propper rally box (short ratio, lower crownwheel and pinion +lsd) so had to run a standard box (with a cracked bellhousing), it would do just under 90mph in second with the 195 50 16 R888 on the back. anyway we were seeded 110 and finished 36 out of 112 starters. so fairs pretty damn well i reckon. out again next weekend so we'll see how she goes with the propper box back in. cant wait. i'll post more pics and vids after the event, have got some in car stuff.

I saw this run at NW stages, in fact I'm sure I've got a video on my phone somewhere. Was pretty impressed, especially at how it progressed up the ranks :thumleft: . It wasn't Weeton that destroyed the box by any chance was it? I ran chase for a fiesta last year and weeton ended our rally!

Where abouts are you based?

did the smc at the weekend and smashed a cv joint, managed to smash a hole in the side of the inner cv cup, it was over the jump, took it realy easy as we have plenty of experience fixing 205's round there. Unfortunately i floored it before the back end hit the deck, the shock load did the damage. still great fun up until then tho, and that was only stage 3. ha.
