my 2 went to the bodyshop today - updated 21/02/09

well, it's finally gone, after buying it back in about august (i think!) ina pretty sorry state, swapping the engine and box, putting a few bits right here and there it's finally time to get a fresh coat of paint on it.

it was in a pretty poor state when i got it. she started out life steel mist grey, then someone decided it was a good idea to paint it metallic blue (as you see in the pictures) and in fairness they didn't seem to make a bad job, but then for some reason it was sprayed again after this and thats where it all went wrong! they don't seem to have keyed the paint in at all do it's just flaked off everywhere!

so here we are, now in a new year and the car sounds and moves great. in a few weeks it'll be back with a fresh new colour i'll get it built back up then mot all ready for spring.

some pics to show how it was and how it is then i'll update when i get it back.

certainly looking forward to getting it all back on one piece and being able to drive it!

colur is going to be super bright yellow, yes it's not the cars standard colour but least i've kept it a gen toyota colour :D

i reckon 2-3 weeks i should have it back, it's being done by my uncle, professional sprayer for the last 20+ years so he knows his stuff and it's costing me next to nothing so he can take as long as he needs at least i know it'll be right when i get it back :D

looks like its been done properly.cant wait to see the top coat going on.

excited to see it finished. \:D/

theres nothing quite like rebuilding your mr2 with freshly painted body parts, was one of the most satisfying and rewarding things ive ever done.

just be careful fitting the newly painted parts m8, get some one to help you for positioning.

i'm gonna put most of it back together at the bodyshop so it saves transport damage plus i can take it straight off the stands onto the car so it should be all good!

not such a good day today

Post by john_p_b »

update:

well the day started really well, everything got painted last night without drama so this morning off we went socket set in hand to get everything bolted back up, all was going well, the paintwork is spot on so was really good to see.

got the boot lid back on and the bonet on, few rubber seals back on then went into the 2nd spray booth he'd used to do all the parts and thats where it all went wrong.....bumpers have gone wrong in a big way!

the paint has just cracked all over the place. can't understand it, we rubbed everything down to being perfectly flat then used a build primer and flatted all that back down to being perfectly flat yet somehow the paint and primer have both cracked threw. absolutely gutted cos it was all going so well.

luckily he's still got just over half a litre of paint left over so it's not gonna cost me anything else but it's a bit disheartening for me as i want to get it on the road and for my uncle as he's spent so many hours this week trying to get everything done and done right.

gotta be said though........it's bloody bright!

Keep at it mate it'll be worth it in the end. The tougher it is the more satisfying it'll be when it's done. Had you thought of keeping it spoilerless now you have the opportunity to cover all the holes etc? Only suggesting it 'cos I love the spoilerless look. Also an opportunity to weld up the aerial hole and fit something a little less... well, vast.

keeping the spoiler as i quite like it really, bloke up the road has a white one with no spoiler and i can't decide on it, some days i walk past a love it other days i walk past and feel something is missing.

Get some phat spats on to even it out and it looks the dogs dangleys. The one thing I wish I'd done whilst mine was in the shop is getting rid of the aerial. Not quite sure what the best arrangement is for the replacement though.

car got delivered back yesterday really only minus the bumpers, lights and the odd trim here and there.

had to give up today in the end as it was getting dark and my dads garage just isn't big enough to work on something freshly painted so will go back to it tomorrow but really all that's left to do is fit the rear bumper, rear lights and change the exhaust as i now have a twin exit magnex to replace the stupidly big and loud single exit that it already had.

absolutely loving the colour, so glad i went for it in the end as it suits the car so well.

pictures to follow tomorrow!
