[Mk2] [Turbo] rev 2 overbooting

Post by steveo825 »

hey

recently fitted a decat downpipe to mr2 turbo. with departure exhaust and apexi filter.

took it it out for a spin the other night an is dangerously overboosting (1.2bar)!!!

i have no boost controller fitted and was wondering what may be the cause. read some posts about the wastegate sticking open? could this be the cause?

thanks

Sticking open would give you hardly any boost.

Not opening enough, would mean gas that is meant to be bypassing the turbo, can't escape through the wastegate, and goe's through the turbo, thus spinning it up more an more.

First thing is to link the turbo straight to the actuator. bypass all VSV etc.

If you are still overboosting you have a wastegate problem. Remove the decat, and you'll probably see where she's been fowling.

Which decat is it?

it was a second hand one i bought off ebay. i think its a xs power one altho there is no markings on it.

skywalker; i have a manual boost controller and had planned on fitting that and disabling the vsv. was going to remove the ball and spring to run it on actuator pressure.

thanks

I just had a similar issue fixed.

Had a XS-Power decat pipe with a mongoose exhaust and Apexi filter on a Rev2 Tubby. was hitting 1.2 - 1.3 bar.

With mine I've had the decat replaced for xxxx one. When Tim removed the XS-Power one, you could see where the wastegate was hitting the pipe when trying to open. As it can't open fully, you then get boost creep.

It's not easy but I'd check the pipe (so you'll need to remove it), you will notice that the flat side of the decat pipe (inside edge that mates to the turbo) is vertical it should be slanted and this is what causes the fouling of the wastegate.

Mine cause the knock sensor to blow as well £111 from MrT + VAT was not good.

Fuel cut is diffent for Rev1 & 2 Vs Rev 3.

Think Rev 1 & 2 is around 13psi, but Rev 3 is around 17psi (stock).

Its a piece of metal with a hole in the middle that fits between the decat pipe and the exhaust system.

If the exhaust pipe work is 3" and you buy a 2.5" restrictor ring, the exhaust will then operator like a 2.5" exhaust system (less flow), so so less boost.

Its a way of masking an issue (in some cases), rather than fixing the root cause.
