Re: 1st mr2 advice?
Not the best of example but well within your budget so your not a million miles away.
Billybob I just meant that if you get a t-top you wont end up with the lower powered 3sfe engine as this only came in the coupe with sunroof
(no spoiler.
no fogs etc, etc).

Re: 1st mr2 advice?
Thats not the best example
'cos the bodywork needs work and there is no MOT.
Who sells a car without an MOT if they're sure it'll fly through? You don't.
You put it through and sell it with the certificate.
Doesn't automatically make it naff but doesn't sound great does it?

Re: 1st mr2 advice?
Looks OK
.
.
.
except for the hideous overlarge wheels.
Mileage isn't quoted I notice though 200k is doable for these cars.
Like I said earlier though it's the condition of the individual car that matters so unless you inspect it it's going to be difficult to say.
.
.
.
Things you want to be checking are intervals back to cambelt replacements, clutches etc to see what might want doing in the near future.

I've seen a few ridiculously priced MR2's and I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole if I was you.
For an extra 500 you could maybe get a nice REV2 in this economic climate.I know its a bit more, but its the difference between admiring your car as it sits outside your house knackered or actually being able to drive it.
If you could muster£1500 you could even have a stab at getting a decent REV3 94 upwards.
Good luck though. Its a buyers market out there.

a 18 your insurance is going to cost a bomb what ever you drive trustme on this for the same price i was insuring a mk3 turbo supra a mate was insuring a saxo same postcode same occupation and same experience/years driving

Re: 1st mr2 advice?
As far as the white one is concerned with the irish plate on it, I'd seriously be asking what the mileage is Billyboy.
Never a good sign if they don't mention it.

If you're not spending a lot on it in the first place they maybe you could just insure it third party, at least then it'd keep your insurance down while you build up some NCB.

Unfortunately you're at that age where insurance companies will charge you more per year than the cars actually worth.

Good luck though, look forward to seeing you around here if you get one.

Oh, and if you do get the white one, get rid of the wheels.
I'd rather run a standard set than those ugly rims

...sorry that's harsh but insurance will be steep for that reason. -and is very very rightly so!
......sorry looking through this again I shouldn't be so negative but at that levelmof experience I do believe there are beter cars tol earn from and get it out your system

no offence but im not quit sure what your getting at? its not asif im looking to buying a skyline, my previous and 1st car was an xr2i so ive already had expensive insurance.

and by the time i get the car ill be pretty much 19

thanks again to the people with positive views about some 1 new looking to buy an mr2.

Re: 1st mr2 advice?
At that price range you are going to see a lot of dogs.
Also will be unlikely to have much service history with them, as if it had would be going at a higher price.

Best bet is to take someone with you who knows their way around a car.
Just don't buy the first thing you see
(is easy to look past a cars faults when you really want one).
Just take your time, save up a little extra cash and i'm sure a decent car in your price range will come up eventually.

Also would definitely insure third party fire and theft, as if you get into even a pretty minor accident they would probably write it off, and your excess will probably be close to what the car is worth.

Good look with the search

Re: 1st mr2 advice?
No offence intended by RST I'm sure Billybob.
He's just pointing out that mid engined cars are very different to even front engined rear drive cars, let alone front wheel drives.
XR2s are small, chuckable, easy to drive hatches but the 2 isn't I'm afraid.
It requires much more technique and that comes with experience.
Thats why insurance is relatively dearer.

Just be careful as I'm sure you would with any unknown car, get to know it slowly and all will be well.
See if you can arrange to go on a handling or track day once you have it to learn how it behaves in extremis.
Good luck with your hunt.
Let us know how it goes.

Re: 1st mr2 advice?
im not sure what the giant xxxxx picture means but i laughed anyway.

and as for the insurance it was always going to be third party fire and theft as its just to expensive other wise.

ive listed to all of your advice and my budget is going to go up as i save for the car
(being payd monthly helps in these circumstances) and my birthday is comingup in april so i will probably be able to spend about
£1200 and from what a few of you have said i can get a fairly decent 1 with that amount of money.

and of course i will not be driving the car like an idiot it will take me a while to understand/ get used to the new experiance but hey thats part of the fun right?

thanks

Re: 1st mr2 advice?
The MR2 isnt hard to drive unless you are really really going for it, or its wet.
Just dont go to crazy untill you have learned how the car behaves, then you will be fine

Re: 1st mr2 advice?
I didn't really mean to be overly negative to be honest but I must admit it must have sounded that way I guess. There's been quite a few folk looking for cars spread across the forums that I've read before and I haven't replied before but jumped on the band wagon that these cars are not just to be jumped in and driven like anything else -like Rob said. At 18 I couldn't have gone anywhere near one but maybe that was just me.
Have to say though I think they handle fantastic but I know some guys with much, much more powerful modern car's who probably wouldn't get past the first roundabout. I think you need to buy the best you can though. I know folk have restored cars from the grave before but it's a bit of a pandora's box for me. Mind you I've stopped believing previous service histories on used cars now.
I wouldn't do TPFT on an MR2 personally, so many folk get caught out if they have a prang. Just my take on it but I've seen friends get screwed with cars they can't afford to fix before. Insurance is so subjective though!
Whatever you go for get it fully serviced incl cam belt etc regardless if they say it's been done before and be prepared to pay for tyres which is probably the most critical thing. Allow yourself some cash on top of buying to replace all the serviceable parts to make sure ...That's what I'd do anyway.
