Running in but needs an MOT

Post by drlunch »

I've just had my engine rebuilt (Rev4 Turbo) after cracking a piston and i will be running it in from next week onwards. The MOT ran out a month back so this needs renewing.

For the MOT, the car will need an emissions test and i hear that they run the car at a certain revs for a period of time.

The garage fixing my car say that they don't think it will pass this test as the car has been sitting around for a while now being fixed and while it was broken (total 8 weeks) and they're a bit nervous doing the emissions test without running it in.

Can anybody offer some advice here, is it likely to pass, is it safe to rev the car to the MOT standard before it is run in???

wow major deja vu here!

see my post a month or so ago

http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic. ... hlight=mot

My rev3 cracked a piston, and MOT ran out whilst rebuilding.

Basically after getting it going and changing the oil, we ran it for an hour or so at tickover to get it bedded in.

Plus a couple of runs up and down the street to check suspension etc.
So yes I'd run the engine a while before handing it to an MOT tester.

The MOT people don't run it at full revs though - its tickover and about 3500 revs I think where they test emissions.

Mine sailed through after a few months off the road.

just dug out paperwork.

when engine is hot, they do a natual idle test - 450 to 150 revs, and a fast idle test - 2500 to 3000 revs.

My rev 3 was tested at 0.30% and 0.20% co2 limit respectively, and passed at 0.17% an 0.04% - this was with standard CAT.

They didn't know about the 3.5% loophole for imports, and weren't convinced by the handbook flowchart.

Still, they let my bald tyres through so I couldn't complain really.
