[Mk2] [Turbo] Cylinder Head Replacement? How Hard

Post by Kenny-Boost »

Hi guys and gals, i'm going to be tackling the cylinder head on my Rev1 Tubby soon, i've tracked down a rev2 head finally.

I've not changed the head on one of these before so i'm just looking for some best practices advice!?

I'll probably not do the timing or if i do i'll get it checked by someone with more experience.

Any help is appreciated :)

Nuts and bolts at the end of the day... just takes a bit longer than normal cars are there are soo many things to get at thats in your way !!

If its any tip... use hex type tools / sockets on all the big torque nuts / bolts ( manifolds / difficult to reach places ) - save yourself the frustration of rounding off.... go buy them up front: Couple of quid up front will save you mole grips in tight places etc....

Important tools :

Hex fitment ( 6 sided ) not star shaped - Halfords professional / Clarks / Franklin Professional as a minimal - Professional not car booty ones ! :thumleft:

10mm - 1/4" and 3/8" drive
12mm - 3/8" Drive

14mm - 3/8" and 1/2" Drive
Deep set and shallow.

Thanks JJ i have a full 6 sided set of half inch drive and i think i have a full set in 3/8 too ... if not i'll buy them :D

I'm fitting a rev2 head because the HG is away on the Rev1 head and also there are a few stripped threads in the exhaust which have had to be drilled out and i don't want to reuse the head ... if its in OK nick i'll sell it, if not i'll scrap it.

I tried to track down a rev3 head but couldn't find one for a decent price in decent nick, i even tried to track down a rev3 lump but money was silly.

Kenny, I've got a rev 3 head... ! Change your mind ??

I've got an inlet manifold and exhaust manifold if I dig around... no throttle housing though...

I can also build this head for HKS cams and valves with new stem oil seals if you're interested ! Be worthwhile doing all that work !! :D

Whats pricey ?!

Stock Rev 3 head + Intake and exhaust ( if I can find it )

or

as above, with HKS 264 cams, 9.2mm lift, HKS valve springs, new valve stem oil seals, fully shimmed up, adjustable cam gears ? :D

If you're interested, please PM me !
