spray worrk

Post by pistol pete »

i have a mk1 two tone (white over silver)
the rear arches have started to go as they all do
so i decided to do it myself and really pleased with the results
only problem is that i cannot get the right silver as the rear arches were done before but they ever got rid of the rust (i have now)
next problem is god only knows what silver they used as i got the orginal colour and its different and looking they have previously sprayed the whole bottom a different colour

so when looking at my car what still needs doing is
the other wheel arch and front passenger wing and a patch of drivers wing

so i am gonna jump in and say really i need the whole bottom end of the car doing....
now i am all for learming new things etc and i onlt paid just over a grand for the car and i cannot afford and do not want to pay someone 500-600 + to it

so i am gonna get borrow / a compressor and do it myself (my mums bf is gonna buy it as he wants one)
i am gonna go a slightly darker metallic grey i found when trying to find the right colour using a white base and the clear laqure

any suggestion ideas or advice before i start :)

The reason touchup and blowins is so difficult with metallics is it all depends on what temperature and pressure the original paint was applied.

Basically if you are blowing in a panel ...even with the original paint, if the temp is higher the base coat ie containing the metallic flakes can settle at a faster rate so the light refracts from them differently which often makes it look a different colour.

Look at it this way ...a board covered in fast drying glue... stick a playing card on edge it starts to fall... blow hot air at glue ... goes off, card sitting at 45 degrees...... slow drying glue same thing...... card starts to fall, add heat but card falls further before glue goes off slower ... now if these were aluminium flakes they would refract the light in different ways giving the impression of the wrong colour.

A bit long winded I know but to cut a long story short, blow the whole bottom end in ....it will be worth it ... blowins in metallic are very difficult unless done by an experienced painter.

Matching paint is very tricky, especially metallics. I think part of it is down to normal 'wear' of the paint over the years. UV light is known to cause changes after a while. Even the best sprayer will struggle to get it spot on. I can just about tell that mine has had a bit of work done but only under certain light, other times it appears to look the same.
