Re: Replacing all the discs & jacking the car up...

Cheers for the info, love the text explanation! A further question regarding the jacking points you both describe... the car jack is designed to sit around the _n__n _ bit, but an axle stand just has \____/ for support, therefore meaning that the pressurewillbe applied to the n__n bit which is just ...

@ tommy-c

Just to be on the safe side... can you clarify which are the best places to place axle stands when jscking the whole car up?

Cheers.

Re: Replacing all the discs & jacking the car up...

Thanks for the replies. I've got the axle stands so that's no problem. The one reason that I was thinking about this route is the bleeding of the brakes. I remember somewhere (prob on here) that someone would bleed all four brakes at the same time running 4x pipes into 4x jam jars half filled with b...

Replacing all the discs & jacking the car up...

Hi,

I'm going to be replacing the front and rear discs and pads next weekend and I've got a question as I'm thinking about jacking up the and putting it on axle stands front and rear and working on it whilst there are no wheels on it... so my question is... is this a stupid idea?

Cheers,

Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Can you drive without droplinks?

Hmmm, spoke to Firstline and they said they'ed not sold to Halfords for a while... who knows! Anyway, Proparts have some on the shelf, only £14 each, so not too bad.

Cheers,

Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Can you drive without droplinks?

My sbits drop links have failed again... so I'm interested in buying some of the Fristline ones that JeffD mentioned (FDL6605). I contacted my local Halfords (Havant) and the bloke there first of all said he cannot search via a part number, then he said that they had not ordered from Firstline in th...

Re: [Mk2] [NA] Rear Strut... an MoT Failure?

I think that they know they are proper parts of the car, being they ordered the replacements... just going to ride with it now, last business that I put towards them, and also, working in a 200+ company just up the road, I'll recommend people take their car elsewhere. :)

Re: [Mk2] [NA] Rear Strut... an MoT Failure?

If I take it to another garage, it's almost the same as letting them do the work. I just cannot work out why it was not failed last year on that. Ah well, only money.

Re: [Mk2] [NA] Rear Strut... an MoT Failure?

Hmmm, after speaking with the garage, they have said that I will get a £25 part retest fee if I carry out the work, but not if they do it, just the hours labour. 'kin cheeky gits!

Re: [Mk2] [NA] Rear Strut... an MoT Failure?

I think it should have been an advisory too.. last year, the other garage didn't even mention it. I think they are after the work to be honest. But as someone that has changed the cam belt, I think the four bolts will be easy enough!

Re: [Mk2] [NA] Rear Strut... an MoT Failure?

hi, when I mean 'drive it away' is related to the need to pay for a full retest... eg, I think for some brake failures you cannot remove it unless you pay for a retest... where as some other minor faults you can have 7 days or so...

Re: [Mk2] [NA] Rear Strut... an MoT Failure?

Hi, typical though that it wasn't picked up last year... Ah well.

The big question is 'can I drive it away?' I know that there are different bandings of failure and what you can and cannot do, but I cannot seem to find out the details on the internet. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Cheers,

M

[Mk2] [NA] Rear Strut... an MoT Failure?

Hi, after posting about this before, I forgot about them and the car went through an MoT last year. This year, different garage they have picked up that they are rusty. Is it an MoT failure? http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w296/m4rcusw/IMG_0753Large.jpg [EDIT] They are thinking of charging me £25...

[Mk2] [Generic] Who knows a thing or two about the different alternators?

Hi, The question is: What are the differences between the varous alternators you can get for Mk2s? The reason I ask is for the second time I've taken a day off work to swap over a bit for my car and found out that the part is incorrect. Today it I was planning on replacing the alternator as it's whi...

[Mk2] [NA] Where to buy an alternator..?

Re: [Mk2] [NA] Someone with a good ear... Annoying whistle.

Amazingly, for some reason, the car when run without the alternator belt attached was really quiet, ie just the sound of an engine... Time will tell as I'll set about getting another one tomorrow from somewhere...
