The mclaren had a carbon fibre body which can be weakened over time when exposed to the heat of the engine, hence the engine bay was lined with gold foil to reflect the heat away from the carbon panels. The MR2 doesnt have a carbon monocoque (unfortunately) therefore the gold linings "job"...
