[Mk2] [Turbo] Clutch replacement - which one?

Post by J-1 »

Will be replacing my clutch over the winter and I was wondering which clutch I should replace it with?
It's 90% road and 10% track, as I am planning on a trip to the Nurburgring in the summer and a few other track nights.

At the moment it's about 305bhp, which may creep up to 315-320bhp at some point (Apexi PFC).

i bought a std type replacement Excedy I think it was. Does me fine running 17psi but I don't track or do traffic light GP's either. There are Stage 1 etc versions so maybe one of them?

Exedy stage 1 as Allan has suggested.

Think these are the same but all different prices.

I'm looking at a replacement clutch to handle around 350-380fwhp. I've spoken to the seller of the more expensive one and he said the Excedy stage 1 would be able to handle that kind of power and it's not far off stock for feel. I'd say this would be suitable for you if you think the standard Exedy replacement isn't sufficient.

I had an exedy one running simmilar power, ran great for 30,000+ miles then had an odd failure where part of the clutch fell apart next to one of the springs.

Ended up going for a helix one instead, slightly heavier pedal but nicer feel to it. Rated to around 350bhp also.

hey mate

If i were you, I'd definitly go with the exedy stage 2. The reason I say that is because I made the mistake of not respecting my first clutch in my v6 even though, like you, I was only interested in the occasional fast road/track action.

But its that 10% fun that kills the clutch prematurely so thats why this time round, I went for something alot more uprated than i needed. I still run my mr2 daily - its a heavy pedal, but its not unmanageable. The stage 2 kit comes with a 3 paddle friction plate (although for my v6 I had to get a custom 6 paddle plate made up).

I've had my clutch fitted (by paul woods) since October 09. The clutch has never slipped, never missed a beat and not only has it improved my shift times, It feels soooo much better especiallly launching the beast and knowing the clutch can handle it.

Its all about what you want at the end of the day. I don't like the feel of the stage 1 exedy - my mate has one in his supercharged mx5. I want a heavy clutch pedal and minimal slip because it inspires confidence in me that my clutch can take the abuse I give it. The exedy stage 1 probably can take that abuse, but it doesnt feel like it can - psychology eh.

Hope this helps

heres a link of what I got although I wouldnt recommend SRB because they assured me the 3 paddle friction plate would fit my box, but when it arrived it didnt and they really let us down on finding a replacement.
