Picking up MR2 front the paint shop

Post by Jamitsi »

just had my Mr2 in the paint shop to orepaint the bonnet bumper and splitter and rear spoiler

wasn't too impressed with the end result, paint finish was pretty good but the imperfections(dimple marks etc) were not good, so its stayed there to get refinished.
here are some pics
check out the bits of masking tape to show were the marks are

they jokingly offered me a job as inspection guy, and i told them they paid him to much!!!

thats like the paintwork i had done recently, from a distance looked great got up close and could see sanding marks guy must have sprayed it in a sand pit not a spray booth as the dust and crap that was stuck in the paint was unreal, suppose thats what you get when you pay cheap money £200 for a spoiler, tubby engine lid and rear panel it will do i suppose till i can maybe master painting myself. :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:
she's all comming together nicely now after a fair bit of cash spent, not bad for just an n/a now for some body kit i think.

I recently bought a Turbo engine lid for my NA. The lid cost me £35, I thought I'd pay another £65 to have it sprayed, all in £100 and job done.

Oh no.

Rather than just handing the lid to the bodyshop, I gave them the lid side panels and the rear (Rev3) centre panel (between the rear lights), which had a scratch. That little lot cost me £200, mostly because the engine lid had so many imperfections.

Whilst the freshly painted panels looked great, they looked odd next to some of the original, slightly faded, boot lid and spoiler. £150 later, the lid and spoiler were re-sprayed.

I also paid a further £25 for a mop of the roof panel (tin-top car so more metal).

All in all, I handed over more than £400 this week, just because I wanted a ****ing Turbo lid. With hindsight I would have never bothered! Admittedly the car looks great now, but I'm still angry with myself for spending so much cash on an old MR2.

In my experience, bodywork repairs always disappoint.

End of rant.

i know what saying bodywork does disappoint your better off getting whole car sprayed, blimey your annoyed at spending £400 on your car i spent £1200 buying mine and i must be nearly at £2,500 ive spent on her could have got myself a decent tubby for that, but thats what i enjoy its a hobby dont drink or smoke just the love of cars i get loads of looks from people in my car and thats what i like. :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

yes the car does look fine from a distance, but like i said to the bloke there i don't drive the car from a distance!

the marks are smal, little bubble marks (like dirty under the paint)
little pin craters ( the guy said thats probably a stone chip, i said don't you prep it flat)
light sanding marks in a few places, and what looked like a deep scratch mark by the side light.
and a run on the rear spoiler

not what you would expect for nearly £700

so its going to be in there a few days longer and probably getting repainted.

i wouldnt dare turn out work to my customers like this  i get my work by reputation , and it only takes 1 poor job and your rep is mud so to speak. your problem could be a number of things but without being able to see a close up i cant say just what :-k but your well within your rights to dispute anything but a perfect finish for the money you are proposed to pay. now i assume your car has been painted in base over clear ? (base coat black , then laquer'ed) now if this is the case , and if the laquer hasnt flowed evenly over the basecoat you will get the effect that there is a small pit , fish eye , dent by appearence. if this is the case it sounds like contamination to me on the basecoat. now i dont think for 1 minute they will re paint your panels ! i think they will simply get a touch up brush and spot a bit of laquer into the dimple marks , pits , chips etc . they will wait until the laquer hardens and simply flat the touch ups and polish them back in. you will be able to see if they have done this by simply looking into the light where one of these dimples was , and you should be able to see a ring . they will use a polish called "hand glaze" to hide these . if the job looks ok at the end and your happy i suggest you re negotiate the final price as the work is sub standard . dont let them know your happy with the final job. just let on you can see imperfections

Get yourself one of them LED torches

you know the ones they sell at petrol stations for £5 about 10-15 leds

This is overkill but you get the idea
http://www.sourcing4u.co.uk/shop/produc ... ucts_id=46

that will show up every imperfection on the paint surface and will show up any handglaze applied over the pits etc.

If you really want to scare them you can borrow my Paint thickness gauge.

Update!!
finally picked the car up this monday afternoon.
after 5-6 weeks and 5 times to pick it up/look at it!

i spent about 40mins in the bosses office and stuck to my guns that it wasn't right!
everytime i went to pick it up, the imperfections were better than the last.

had one more look at it in natural light before i made a decision .
then i told him i would give him 50% , came to a deal of £300 + Vat.
which was about £325 off original quote.

didn't think they would come to that much of a deal. as its about 99% right.
