[Mk2] [Turbo] Engine's fooked - she's back!! 08 March

Post by Leon. »

I broke down today on the Guildford run #-o ](*,)

0.5/1 mile from the pub coming onto the slip road of the A3 and my engine suddenly cut out. Didn't notice anything happening or making a noise other than the fact the engine had cut out and the lights on the instrument panel came on. Tried restarting to no avail, car was turning over fine and all leads etc were still in place, nothing notiveably out of place.

Have to say a massive thanks to Chris aka Limeymk1 who came back down the dual carriageway (thanks to Tiamat noticing me stopping) and sat there with me waiting for the AA to turn up and helped to diagnose the problem. He even offered to lend me his car while mine gets sorted, very nice chap indeed :thumleft:

Also big thanks to Alex who followed the recovery lorry to 3S and drove me home, thanks mate :D

I love IMOCers

Car's gonna be in the safe hands of 3S so fingures crossed [-o<

Could it be a snapped cam shaft, cos those figures look like a valve is stuck open.

Just not sure I've got the funds at the moment - I also only have one car ](*,)

Guess its possible mate, my engine knowledge is cr@p. Cams themselves appear ok. James does seem to think its possibly valve related but won't know until she's opened up.

As I said in my PM, its the fact that its across all 4 cylinders thats the most worrying.

Do you know how the spark plugs looked when he took them out? - Any damage?

Has he been able to look at the top of the pistons from the spark plug holes? Any sign of damage here either? - Mainly looking for foreign objects being ingested here.

Ah, sorry to hear its poorly mate :(

Prob completely unrelated but she was putting a fair amount of brownish smoke out when you put your foot down just after the slip road joining the A3 ...

Or is that normal for tubbys?

Brown aint normal. If its black then its fuel, so just running rich. Normal for tubbys when booted.

Don't worry about it mate, I would've thought it was normal too probably. It was going to happen anyway so I just have to cough up to get it fixed now :|

How drastic does an engine transplant sound? Think that's what's on the cards. The risk of not knowing what wrong, and the cost piling up is a big worry, I have a mortgage to pay...

xxxx pi$$ed off with the car right now, nice way to repay me after looking after it like I do

rev 12 or 3 mate, there are plenty or cheap rev 1/2 engine on the bay at the moment but not rev 3.

if u want a quick fix then yeh go for a lump of the bay, get it sent to 3s and get them to swap it, that will be you chepest bet me thinks

BUT

there is no gaurntee the condition of the new lump. if thats the route u are going down then i would tell 3s now so they stop working on it

3S have a donor engine available now (might even be rev 4, can't remember) and James says its in v good condition, hence I think this is the best solution. I'll make sure I get a warranty with it though because like you say, you never know!!!

They have stopped for the time being...

Gutted Leon.
Hope they get it sorted out.
I have a spare Tubby on the driveway if you need a vehicle at all, all road legal.
Let me know if you want it and you can have it for a few weeks while 3s sort yours.
I am going to live forever, or die trying!
