MkI 180bhp Supercharger Conversion *UPDATED *

Post by EarL »

1988, F reg, MK1 MR2 (not imported) in red, that has had a little bit of money spent on it!

Image

AE101 Supercharged engine sourced from Fensport, and installed by Northampton Motorsport just a few months ago at a cost of £4000! They've done an incredible job, and even installed an oil cooler and re-baffled the sump should it get used for trackdays!

On the rolling road, it produced 180BHP because of the large pulley kit was also installed. The car has only done about 500 miles since the engine was installed and it runs beautifully. It also had a new clutch at this time.

KYB shocks (slightly stiffer and lower than stock, non-adjustable from Fensport). Work carried out by Northampton Motorsport and all bushes replaced at the same time.

The brakes have been fitted with braided hoses. Standard discs but Green Stuff pads (although to be honest I think they need changing soon).

The car is fitted with 15 inch, 5 spoke alloys, but will be sold with the original 'teardrop' 14"s as well.

The engine bay lid hasn't been converted yet to give appropriate cooling vents for the SC but a temporary fix is in place which works incredibly well!

The body work was next on the list of things to be done so is a little bit shabby. Rear aches were cut back and rebuilt last year 'to a standard' but they're not concourse. The underneath of the car had good attention last year too and is very sound and has been treated. The front of the offside front wing needs some attention too. All in all, the car is very solid, and needs very little work to make it into a super little road car.

The car is presently in storage, and needs both an MOT and tax, but I am confident it will pass the MOT.

I am advertising the car on behalf of my son, who bought the car earlier this year, but unfortunately, the insurance is far too much for him.

A real bargain at £1700 ono.

Earl, I've sent you my email and number as per our conversation.

Hi all,

Sorry about the lack of response, I'm working in a Vodafone blackspot at the moment! :(

As far as I am aware, the car does not have an LSD.

The previous owner (Stuart Sides) had the work done, and as far as I know, used the stock gearbox in the conversion. I'll email him and enquire, but he's incredibly difficult to get hold of as he now lives in Holland.

If you're at all interested in the car, please ring after 5pm, as there will be somebody home then.

Kind regards,

EarL.

Hello all,,

My apologies for not updating this before, but I've been working all over the place, and have recently been ill with a chest infection.

The car is now at home, and I can promise you it's well worth having a look at.

The paintwork is not brilliant, and the laquer is peeling in a couple of places, but apart from that, it's absolutely fine. Structurally, it's excellent, and mechanically, it's spot on. The engine runs absolutely beautifully, and the supercharger really does add to the fun. It makes the MkI the car it always should have been. Overtaking is effortless...

Anyway, now that I've had chance to take a good look around the car, I can confirm that it's also had polybushes all round, and the dampers replaced for firmer units, along with slightly stiffer and lower springs. These add to the handling without sacrificing the car's overall ride quality.

Ok, now the bad bits, and believe me, there's not a lot of them...

1. The alternator bearing is rattly (its a common fault, as it sits directly in the path of water that drips from the engine cover).
2. The passenger side number plate light needs replacing.
3. The reversing light bulbs need replacing.

Apart from those minor faults, I can't find anything else wrong with it. It goes like the clappers, and is extraordinarily good on fuel. I made it from Long Marston to very nearly the severn Bridge, on just a quarter of a tank of petrol!

I've also found a com port PC connector that's been fitted in the ashtray, indicating that the ECU is programable. I can't confirm this though, as I can't get hold of Stuart, the car's previous owner. If I do, I'll obviously let you know.

Kind regards,

EarL.
