hello mate,

on rev1 and 2, the oil filter is on the forward side of the block, next to the exhaust manifold.

So it will be to the drivers side of the top exhaust shield. With the turbo to intercooler boost pipe in place it will be hard to get at.

Oil leak: easy cure for the drive is to get a big cardboard box, and spread it out flat on the drive. Well known for landrovers and air cooled VWs.

if it's just a drip, and isn't the sump, then the next place to check would be the dipstick gasket - there should be a small rubber o-ring where the dipstick tube goes into the block.

but you're going to have to get the back of the car up, get the undertrays off and have a good look round.

don't forget to keep the oil topped up, or preferably changed with a new filter if you've only just got the car.

hth

Hmm, difficult to tell. Could be a seal or just a nut which needs tightening. I guess it's better to be leaking on the exterior rather than burning the oil.

Have you tried just tightening up your rocker cover?

The engine cover  . It has quite a few screws holding it down, get a philips screw driver and if they are loose then give then a wee tighten.

It's very common for them to loosen off and allow oil t sweat out passed the gasket. If it is that then you may also have some oil in your spark plug holes.

Is easy enough to check :thumleft:

if its coming down the passenger side of the engine, does the leak appear above the gearbox? if so it could also be the distributor oil seal as these have a tendancy to harden over time leading to leaks.

hi guys well my car is back from Toyota, had my full service done pretty much everything sound :D but... the OIL LEAK is still there!! they cleaned all my engine etc and i took it back 3 days later.

There saying the head gasket is leaking a small amount of oil out so i need a new seal, price 4 part and labour £400!!! OMG!!

is this a job i can do myeslf?? as gotta remove throttle bodie and manifold etc?? ](*,)

FWIW, my old Rev2 had a oil leak which also was from the Head Gasket. Personally, I'd not worry unless you're losing a fair amount of oil (eg more than 1 litre / 1,000 miles)

The only fix is a Head Gasket replacement - the £400 price to replace by MrT is a very fair price (I think its a mistake!) as all the head has to come off, meaning removal of intake / exhaust + Turbo / fueling etc.

If you're doing that amount of work, it is worth considering doing other things at the same time - eg timing belt, idlers, water pump as access is easy once the timing belt is off.

Id' also be tempted to fit a new turbo at the same time, and maybe fitting a thicker HG if you want more power - this is what I did and got a nice 280-300bhp from the car.

lol Yes it's a job you can do yourself. Just remove everything that is in the way, no manifolds have to be removed, I think the gasket costs about £25, people sometimes use some silicon sealent with the gasket to ensure no leaks, should take you a max of 1-2 hours to do, 20 mins if you're really handy with the tools.

Any probs give me a shout and I'll work out the full walkthrough for you, I'd just have to look at my engine to figure out exactly what I did and in what order. :thumleft:

LoL - I read your reply - and was like, 20 minutes to do a HG?!?

Agree - Cam covers are very often the source of leaks from the engine. Easiest way to diagnose the source of leaks is to get the engine completely steam cleaned to get rid of oil on the block, and then cover it in talc (seriously)

The Talc goes clear where the oil is leaking from, so after a quick drive and then check it should be obvious where the source of the oil is.
