[Mk2] [Generic] Quad tail light

Post by mr2nut123 »

I'm looking to get the inner two lights on for running lights as well as braking. I have a rev5 but can't find any spare looms or bulb holders for a rev3+. Would a rev1 loom be ok if I simply cut off the bulb holders with the 3 wires?

You can fit Rev 1/2 bulb holders into Rev 3+ lights. They're not a perfect fit, but they do go with a bit of persuasion.

Cheers Craig! :)

That actually makes a bit of sense, as recently I bought a set of all orange front indicators (I prefer them to clears..) and I have to take some thin nose pliers and snip a tiny amount of plastic from one of the little grooves, to be able to click the bulb holders in. Once that was done, they twisted in nice and tight.

Is it the same for the rears? I'm right in saying that as long as they've got three wires, I'm good?

No prob mate.

Rev 1/2 bulb holders have 3 lugs on them. Rev3+ have 4, so the rev 1/2 bulb holders can be persuaded to fit.

All you need is dual filament (3 wire) bulb holders from any revision, with a few inches of wire. :thumleft:

You're better off buying the JDM units, rather than convert your UK ones to JDM.

To remove the fog light lenses from UK clusters means heating them up in an oven etc to melt the glue to remove the red lenses to get at the fog light inserts.

Plus the risk of melting your lights!

Well, here goes guys! :) Quite an easy job to do, especially if you don't have a rear fog. Few quick steps for others wanting to do it:

* Split the green wire (which is the running light) and join it to other green wire on the 'new' 3 wire bulb holder. ~Ensure that you leave a good 20cm on the green wire when you cut it from the spare loom you purchase~

* Now chop the inner bulb holder off that has only 2 wires. ~I'd recommend cutting these 2 wires a good 5cm from the holder to keep as a spare~

* Take the green/white wire (the brake light) and the black/white wire (ground) and then attach to the same wires coming from your 'new' 3 wire bulb holder.

* Test them with a tap of the brake and flick your sidelights on. I used my phone on record behind the car to verify each bulb. Stick the clusters back on and you're done! 8)

TIP: Use some wire nuts to join the wires. Just as reliable and super simple rather than faffing with a soldering iron and heatshrink. Just ensure that you use a bit of electrical tape just under them to keep the wires grouped as they enter the nut :thumleft:
