How to replace the weather strips on a mark2 tbar

www.partsdiscountwarehouse.com have very reasonable prices for all mr2 parts.

I placed an order for 6 strips, which includes the tbar end strips, the strips around the roof and pillars, and the strips around the door.
The total for the order came to $330 including $80 delivery. This came to under '190 delivered. UK Toyota charges '150 each for the big strips. Tools needed are:
Weatherstrips (duh!) [Brick wall]
flat bladed screwdriver (taped to avoid scratching)
cross head screwdriver
clip remover (or tack remover)
10mm socket
15mm socket

T-Bar strips:

take the tbar panels out of the car and undo the 2 clips at each end of the existing weatherstrip.



Pull the strip out and free it from the aluminium channel up to the roof at both front and back. Take out the wind deflector and the screws (and plastic grommets)


visible in the weather strip, and pull the strip up and out. This should leave the strip only attached by 3 bolts through the roof at the corners.


Undo the seatbelt bolt (15 mm socket) and pull the trim away. Pull the covers over the jesus handle off using a flat blade screwdriver, and remove the handle (10mm socket). Slide a flat blade screwdriver under the trim and pop the tbar guides out.


You can now pop the tops of both front and back pillar trims out, and get access to the nuts holding the rest of the weatherstrop on. You will need to remove the Jesus! handle to do this. Undo the 2 bolts at the back (keeping hold of the steel plate) and one bolt at the front.


Pull the weatherstrip up releasing the bolts from the car. The bolts are captive in the strip, which can be seen on the new strip. You may find these are unwilling to move at first, so a little wiggle will help.

Clean the area where the strips were. I used a rag and some silicon lube. This disolves any gunk and leaves an oily finish which should prohibit rust. If you find any rust spots, I would recommend treating them now.


Place the new weatherstrip on the car using the captive bolts as a guid. Stretch the rubber and pop the new plastic brackets into the holes in the roof, and push the strip into position on the roof.

Take off the paper strip covering the black gunk by the captive bolts. Push the strip into place on the corner, and pull the rear lower section towards the back of the car to force the gutter into the weatherstrip groove.


Once this is in tight, push the strip into place on the vertical section and use a flat bladed screwdriver to secure the strip into the aluminium guide rail. Remove the paper at the bottom of the strip, and push the clips home. You will notice a small plastic clip which will sit behind the lower trim panel. Slide this behind the trim and push as far back as you can with your fingers to secure it. Run a screwdriver along the back edge of the strip so the rubber pops behind the quarter window frame.

Follow the same procedure on the front of the weatherstrip. I would recommend doing this second, as the aluminium channel here is much tighter than the rear.



Door Strips

Remove the door interior trim ( there are directions on this available so I won't go into detail).


Undo the 2 clips at the end of the weatherstrip (1 front 1 back)

and undo the screws.


Pull the weatherstrip away from the door at one end, pulling at all the small clips. Most of this will stay with the weatherstrip, so remove any that stay in the door.


Clean the area (again I used silicon lube and a rag). Push the end of the weatherstrip onto the door at the rear end, and push all the small clips in until you reach the other end. Remove the paper strip at the front of the weatherstrip (more black gunk) and push this end into place over the front of the door. Install the 2 screws you removed earlier,


and replace the door trim.

Tbar Edge Strips

Take the tbar panels off the car, and lay them on a soft surface, e.g. a carpet or a rug. Remove the handle and interior trim panel (see eccentric tbar rod guide KB article. Undo the 2 screws from the weatherstrip and pull the strip off the glass panel.


Clean the surface and position the new weatherstrip on the panel. As before you will need to push the rubber into the aluminium channel.

Remove the paper strips and press the weatherstrip onto the panel to allow the gunk to stick on the panel.


Adjust any eccentric guides fitted for a looser fit).

Fit the panel onto the car, and adjust as necessary using eccentric guides. Once you are happy with the fit, install the trim panels and handles.

Once all new weatherstrips are installed, you may want to adjust the placement of the door glass. There are adjustable fittings top and bottom, front and rear which allow the window to be adjusted in any direction.
When I had put the tbars back on the car, it poured down with rain and hail within 5 minutes

I'm glad I was quick! The good news though, was no leakage. [Smile]
