Just wondering what a realistic price is to replace the clutch on my 1989 mk1.
Also how long would the clutch last given that is only slipping slightly and am i better off ensuring Toyota parts are used.
Thanks,
Ian

£120 labour +parts+vat. So £200-250 all in is a reasonable price.
The specialist clutch places tend to be cheaper and better IMO as day in day out they do clutches so very rarely go wrong

Re: replacement cluch
LUK clutch from www.brakesint.com ~£100 including vat and delivery
fitting from 3S service centre £150
100% of the engine power getting to the gearbox - Priceless
5th gear popping out because 100% of engine power now makes it to the gearbox - annoying

I beg to differ Mr Clutch cost me £430 for replaceing my clutch and skim /resurface the flywheel
Re: replacement cluch
I used 3S Service centre in Hook, Hampshire. I bought a clutch from a forum member for £50 and James @ 3S fitted it for £150... £200 all is not bad in my opinion
If you can't see the angle, you're in trouble.

there are 3 unchained clutch places near me that will do an MR2 clutch for £120 if you provide the clutch.
Re: replacement cluch
In that case they must of used a gold plated clutch on mine the price they charged

Re: replacement cluch
On my old mk1 i used a place called A1 Clutches. They did it for £150 and that came with a two year warrenty. I sold the car after about 18months but it was fine in all that time. They have a couple of places, one in Birmingham and one in Dudley.
Re: replacement cluch
I have just changed my clutch myself, I would not recommend it to anyone, it is a pig on your own, but it is doable. I paid £62 for a Ferodo 3 piece kit, so nice new clutch for £62

Yep, it is a fairly straightforward job, but getting the box back on is a pig!
Re: replacement cluch
FWIW, its a job I've also got to do on my Mk1a - I got quotes all around £350 for parts and fitting locally to me by independent garages as well as a MR2 specialist.
I've got a new clutch parts kit from someone here for a MK1a -
I'm going to have a got a replacing it with a friend in a few weeks time.

I'm planning on replacing my gearbox shortly, just in the process of blinging it up first. Guess I ought to consider changing the clutch at the same time...
Any other jobs worth doing when switching gearboxes?

FWIW, just been DIY'ing the Clutch change with Blokey's help here
Other things to do, possibly:
- New Gearbox oil (no brainier)
- Check / Repack the CV joints with grease
- replace the gear selectors with solid bushes ( there are kits around)
- Maybe Change the Clutch hydraulic fluid
- Check / repair the engine mounting bushes
- Consider replacing the lower rear suspension balljoints
Top Tip - using an engine hoist to hold the gearbox as it was jointed back onto the engine made re-aligning the gearbox again much, much easier.
It took us ~ 5 hours on Saturday to get the gearbox off (but left the clutch / pressure plate on) and then ~ 4 hours today to get it all mostly back on again - things seemed to go back together much more easily than they'd come apart initially.

Re: replacement cluch
Thanks for the replies. No way I'd even consider doing it myself, was going to call in the A-Team
Why replace the gear selectors with solid bushes - what's that all about?

It's made gear changes a bit more 'definite', easier, and less sticky... for me anyway. For the sake of a fairly cheap kit (They used to be sold by one of the affiliates - Neil Ross - on here but he doesn't do them anymore. I got mine from this group buy) it's worth it.
Basically they replace the original rubber bushes with metal replacements. In my case this was great as the original rubber bushes were very easy to squeeze with my fingers...
They're occassionally available on eBay Such as this one although they're a bit more pricey...
I started a KB article on fitting them but never finished it. I don't think... but happy to help if necessary. Think it took me about 15 mins to fit them...

Re: replacement cluch
Yep as Max said, makes the gear change much more positive & precise, not sure that i would change the selector bushes just the ones at the gearbox end. Jinxy
