[Mk2] [NA] Looking to rejoin the MR2 ranks

Post by Sumilidon »

Hi all.

I used to own a 1991 GT Sports a few months ago but sadly inexperience and a couple of spins led to a little bit of an overreaction.......

...So 8 months on I am enjoying my 1996 Vectra (no, seriously it's a good car) but decided to get another MR2 as well.

I have read a few posts and wanted to ask a few newbie questions:

Is there such a thing as a GT Sports? (UK Model)
* If not, other than a turbo what is the model with the higher BHP?

What sort of things should I be looking for in a 100k+ car (timing belt etc)

Which year registration was the suspension altered to help prevent the snap oversteer?

I am ideally looking for a UK, NA, GT T-Top, around the 2k mark. Preferably in Black but Red would be fine also.

Oh and I live rght next to an MR2 specialist so no worries of dodgy garage repairs for me :)

Any help much appretiated

If I had 2k spare I would consider a good Mk1. The contrast with your Vectra would be stark, and provide you with interesting motoring at opposite ends of the spectrum. Then, when funds allow, you could consider plonking the mk2 turbo engine into it and go Porsche hunting.

Just a thought.

I tried a MKI before I got the MKII and I have to say I preferred the MKII. Besides, I have always irrationally liked the MKII.

My last MKII cost me £1800, 1991 GT Sports and it was solid. No rust, no engine problems, needed a new clutch but that was 5k miles away. The guy I got it off had it for 10 years, garaged and loved it. His wife then fell pregnant and, well, the pram didn't fit.

I don't need one right away so I can wait for the right one to come along, and as said, even a cheap one needing a little work is no big as I live next to an MR2 specialist.

Oh and I'm avoiding a turbo as my insurance quote triples!

Wouldn't mind a NA import if any of you know a good place for insurance :)

Nice one mate. Yeah N/A's are good cars. You should get something fairly decent for £2k but £2.5k would probably guarantee something better. Adrian Flux, A-Plan and Sky are about the cheapest for insurance. Good choice with the mk2 :thumleft: .

just a quick bump to see if anyone knows the answers to the questions:

Is there such a thing as a GT Sports?

Year the suspension was altered?

specific things I should look for in a 100k mile car?

mucho thanks :)
