The gearbox has decided not to offer neutral or an effective reverse.

Everything's fine in all forward gears, o/d etc.

In neutral it creeps forward in jerky movements or judders hysterically if you hold it on the footbrake.

Selecting reverse the car has to be revved hard to jump back in little leaps as if the rear brakes are locked.

It doesn't appear to be a selector out of adjustment as I don't have an effective neutral to readjust the lever to.

If it was brakes bindng presumably it wouldn't cause the forward creep in neutral.

The only other wierd thing is the handbrake cable seems to tighten when it happens but the rear brakes are off.

This is intermittent and sometimes clears after a long drive or frantic hammering of the selector lever.

Any one knowledgable got an opinion please?
