insuring your MR2 as a kit car? anyone do this?

Post by nightSpirit »

What qualifies your car for kit car insurance?...I presume it's when most things are not factory spec and or the look is a certain percentage different? or something...kitcar insurance is pretty cheap.

I'm sure some of the 355 kitted MR2 boys on here have done that, my mate did it on his a few years back and the insurance was peanuts.

Gotta re-insure at the end of March and kind of need to find cheaper insurance (well get a quote atleast, declaring mods is painful). So far I'm getting er..no quotes...nobody wants to touch the car it seems, so my other question is, who on here with a highly modded turbo has the cheapest insurance, who's it with and what's it costing you?

insurance

TRD2000 kit or 355 kits are the only two ways I know of for a MK2 to be registered as a kit.

ah right,

But surely there must be like 'if over 30% of the car appearance is changed' or something rule? you know how stupid these rules are!.

I have the full Border kit on mine, virtually nothing is stock and most people say 'what is it' or 'is it an MR2?' with some doubt in their voices..so that got me thinking.

Any quotes though on modified turbos?. I'd declare the filter, exhaust and turbo...then kit and wheels I think...internals should be fairly well hidden. Or Can I get a quote from one of those companies that has the 'any mods as long as the cc isn't increased by x' rule that you sometimes hear about.

As a matter of interest, at the moment my Fiesta Si (1.4) is dearer to insure (TPFT) than my fully comp turbo...go figure, but then again you should see me driving the Si.

who says "logic" and "insurance companies" should ever be in the same sentence?

I was insuring my 2 as a second car, and if I'd kept it garaged and do only a low mileage, I'd have got insurance dirt cheap as a classic car.

But having no garage meant it couldn't be a classic...

Adding the g/f got the premium down too, even though she never drives it (well I never drive it either as the engine's in bits, but they didn't need to know that)

it's a joke isn't it?

Surely there must be a website somewhere that tells you how your car gets classified as a kit car/ custom car?.

Wouldn't mind just getting a few quotes that include all mods and an agreed value of the vehicle (not market value).

AFAIK normally you have to change a major component, such as engine (not just swap it with one of the same type), drivetrain or complete suspension. With the suspension, thats a completely new design type change.

there's a thread that contains this topic in the modifications section under Megatronuk's MK1.5 update. Basically you'll have to re-register it and put it through an SVA.

ah right,

well how come the 355 kitted mr2 is classed as a kit car...if only the bodywork is changed (in escence). Surely all fully kitted cars should be?. That's why I'm sure there is something somewhere about if x% of the cars body..blah is different from OEM spec.

On the other side of things, can someone on here say of a good insurance company for a highly modified turbo? there are a few about so someone must be declaring the mods etc...if not, it's a bit daft.
