[Mk2] [Generic] Bit smokey?

So I'm starting to get a bit of smoke from the exhaust.

No real pattern to it, just whenever it fancies.

No smoke when cold on start up, no smoke on overrun, no difference when hot or cold it just smokes a bit sometimes worse than others.

What I have noticed is that I've needed to dial in more to the Blitz EBC to get the same boost and it doesn't feel a like it's coming right in boost as quickly as it was.

No stuttering type behaviour when boosting or struggling to hold boost just doesn't feel as fresh and spinning up like it did. Plus like I've stated the car is getting a bit smokey.

Compression across all cylinders is perfect however.

Car has a rev 3 full rear clip and was all finally checked and properly finished off/installed eventually by a well respected MR2 specialist and has been meticulously maintained regardless off cost. Car has never been taken past 5000rpm. Oil changes every three months or each 3000miles whichever comes sooner.

It's a standard CT20 turbo and just had a new turbo oil return pipe as the previous one had a tiny leak.

Does this sound like a turbo issue? Could it just be the seals and if the bearings and shaft are all within acceptable tolerances should I just get the seals replaced and reinstall or is a full refurb the way to go if indeed the turbo would seem to be the most likely problem?

Any input and advice from those in the know greatly appreciated.

Yep, it could be many things unfortunately.
Is your standard CT20 ceramic? Could be broken turbine blade which results imbalance then seals to go on compressor or turbine side (or both)
Seen that happen...


Could be valve seals as well. Relatively easy to check especially if a friend driving behind you. I guess you know how to so don't go into details.
Even that won't give a definite answer but its a start.

Fair comments and thank you, I know it could well be valve seals but the fact it doesn't smoke excessively from cold start up and the compression across all four cylinders is good makes me think/hope it isn't.


Well that and the other issues I posted about the turbo.

Again, just wondered if anyone had had the same problems and could comment as despite what so many seem to do on forums that's kind of what they're for I suppose.

At least they used to be before every second member was an expert and some sort of keyboard typing tough guy.

Is it any wonder most of your posts go ignored? The only time you post in here is when there's something wrong with your car. I've yet to see any thread offering anything to the club.

Funny how a guy that had endless complaints about him and his work was allowed to remain a "trader" on here for so long was all good. Pay the fee and you can rip off whoever you want with no recourse it would appear.

always have to up the boost on my controller in the summer about 0.1 bar to keep it at the same as it would be in the winter, then when the winter comes it is over boosting so it gets turned back down

Bad turbo seals (smoke) usually show up after long hot idles. And by hot, after a hot run (not a warm up on the driveway). Smoke would be blue in colour.

Having to crank up ebc more and more could be a case of ECU pulling back a bit of timing because of a few knock events, something to do with less timing effecting exhaust energy by creating high EGTs. High EGTs would effect efficiency of the turbo. Try an ECU reset. Some owners including myself have noticed night and day differences after a reset and I've in turn had to redo ebc settings.

Why on earth you not revving past 5k rpm? Lol. That's shameful 🤪
