KN filter cleaning tips!

My filter was either due a clean or a replacement after 18-20 months of use.

It was basically black and very greasy!



I purchased the recommended cleaning kit, the KN recharger kit.
One things for sure the "cleaning spray" part of the kit was next to useless!!!
Only thing the kits good for is the re-oiling spray.



I cleaned it twice with this stuff and it still looked the same black it started out already. Granted it removed a tiny portion of the old oil and a few bits of dirt once i ran some water through, but visually no different. I was less than impressed!! Infact I'd go as far as saying its a complete waste of money. Just buy the re-oiling spray.

So a quick google and I came across someone who used a cloths stain remover cleaner along with mixing it with soda water!!

This worked a treat! I gave it a couple of good soaks and you could see the old oil and a TON of grime float to the surface and heavier stuff sink to the bottom, AMAZING!!

Soda water, vanish cleaner and warm/hot water and a bit of soak time = a new filter!!
I let it dry out for a day or so in the house, then a light spray with the oil.

I've always just used washing up liquid. Let them soak for a while in hot soapy water then let the tap run through down the pleats then inside out.

soap wouldnt have done nout in my case.
i needed something strong to react chemically with the grease/grime without the need of scrubbing it down.

news to me, i didnt think it mattered?
anyhow ive probably oiled it less than it comes as new anyhow.

Dont think it matters for you .. its more a problem for cars with afm .

You'd be suprised. I've had some sort of open filter on a car for the last 17 years, most of them dailys and never needed anything more than soap and running hot water. Occasionally I've used a soft paint brush to speed up the process.
The oil is a dust collecter as the filters aren't as fine as paper ones. People used to make a big deal about oil getting on maf sensors and the like. I used carb cleaner on stuff like that which worked ever time.

Yeah thats what i herd .. oiled for n/a ..dry for turbo
