There's not much to check over compared to a different car sean albeit id imagine the seller is expecting you to be just picking it up. Whilst your with the seller check if the hoses from hell have been done, if they haven't put it on a list of things to do sooner rather than later. Ask about the timing belt but it's not essential it's been done recently as there a non interference engine.

When you get it home peel back the boot carpet and check the top corners are solid, then inspect the sills and rear arches and around rear bumper, the imports tend to rust less so if it's solid think about undersealing it soon. Also look up removing the sill sponges.

And if there is one make sure you get the locking wheel nut key

Standard stuff really - if it seems well looked after then it generally will be ie. clean interior, half decent paint, wheels is good nick etc. Saying that though the engine bay of mine was filthy when I picked it up and she's turned out to be very healthy!

As for the mechanicals just listen for funny noises, smoke on boost, any weird boost characteristics such as fuel cut and misfiring, knocking sounds on bumps and full lock, temperature gauge sitting anywhere other than just under half.

And finally as the others have said rust, not always visible until you go digging unfortunately though

One good thing if bidding on e gay is if it doesnt match up to the description (faults found that wasnt on the description) then you are entitled to walk away as "not as described".

Unless of course, those faults were found to be De Minimis. Or in its unabbreviated form, maxim de minimis non curat lex.

Issues in law found to be De Minimis are of so little significance, they are deemed irrelevant to the case in hand.

It depends on the wording off the advert. If the advert states the bodywork is immaculate and you get there and its covered in swirls / minor scratches, that's not irrelevant. If it was described as 'good condition for age' and we're talking about a 20 year old MR2, thats different.

This is a good example of an original factory standard car without any detractive modifications. The car has been well looked after and is a pleasure to drive.



My Partner and I drove around Europe last summer covering a good 2000 mile journey and it did not miss a beat.

De Minimis can apply in any legal action. It does not have to refer to a financial value or cost.

For instance, a yellow line PCN. If a yellow line has to be 100mm wide, and you argue the yellow line you parked on was only 96mm wide, and therefore it wasn't a yellow line as prescribed. You would lose as the difference would be found to be "De Minimis".

In the case of the description of a used car, it would be a finding of the court as to whether an issue was DM. Either in terms of description, or value.

On a car described as show quality, minor scratches would be a no-no. Where as a 20 year old car with paintwork in VGC, minor scratches would be DM.

Let's say sump seal is damp. And a drip on the back corner. Cost to rectify about £80. On a £5K car, value would definitely be DM.

So DM is always going to be related to the case in hand.

And yes, you're right. The car's overall condition would be judged based on it's age and mileage. In this case, the seller has been particularly honest - "This is a 20yr old car so please don’t expect something that has just come out of the production line or showroom. The car is used but has been well cared for." So i would expect minor issues here and there.
