Rear bumper polystyrene

Is it needed? Because I took off the bumper, and this happened

They're meant to absorb impact as the bumper skin flexes during an accident but more likely at low speed impact ie cars reversing into a parking space and nudging your car lol and not going so much damage

Without it, I'm guessing the impact is transmitted to the bumper bar and the chassis, bending bumper irons etc and likely creasing the floor (depending upon the speed of impact)

I'd just use blobs of silicone and stick it back onto the bumper bar or buy a replacement

Would keep it designed for low speed impacts. I would go with the above use some silicone to stick it back on. You can't see it once the bumper is on.
