Dry stored for 8 years

Post by madfish »

I'm going to look at an MR2 turbo this week that's been kept in a garage for the past 8 years unused...

It's low mileage (50k) and looks solid but with it being stood for so long what would you recommend is checked/replaced...

A full fluids service and cambelt would probably be done as a start... anything else? :)

It's an 89/G plate... is that a Rev 1?

Are they still worth spending £3k on if it's in good condition? Ideally was looking for a rev 3 but they seem to be quite rare or rusty sheds...

Thanks,
Mark

You'll very likely need new brakes all round and for sure tyres all round as well.

This could get very expensive.

How certain is it it's been dry stored all that time?
People like to play on these 'half truths' to get as good a price as possible.

Not sure at all TBH...

Might still hold out for a rev 3, I'll no doubt regret not getting one if I don't :)

I'll still take a look as it's just around the corner from me though

Worth having a look but imho probably not worth more than £1k (in excellent condition) purely because of how much you're probably going to spend getting it roadworthy!

It's nice that some of us still care enough about our MR2's to put them into storage rather than leave them to become one with their garden though

If it's free of rot and it runs, it's worth more than £1k IMO.

There is current MOT on it so that must be a good sign...
are the Rev 1's really not worth going for? I'm not looking to chase big BHP figures but the older rear suspension set up concerns me a little...

Avoid. Can of worms.

You couldn't pay me to take on an MR2 that hasn't been used in 8 years.

Me too a little...

I'm assuming it's either recently been tested for the purpose of sale or the garage at which it is stored also does MOTs. ..

TBH I've not been too keen on the seller's responses to my questions and with the views on here I think I'm going to give it a miss.

hold out for a good rev3 mate

i wouldn't like to think i was buying an old rev1 that had been stood dormant for 8 years

i recently sold a mkk1 escort i bought as a barn find that was stood for 11 years and jesus i paid £1200 for it and the amount of parts i had to replace and the work it took spent 1 full year of 8 hour days to get it back to this

i would think twice honestly unless you have the cash there prepared for some problems

just my opinion mind

for the price of rev3+s these days you'd be mad to buy a rev1/2, you'd only be wanting to upgrade the power in a few months and the rev1/2 are quite restrictive in this area :(

My NA had covered around 4000 miles since 2007, it spent much of its time in a garage as a fair weather third car. Picked it up a few months ago and I've spent over £1k already. I think it needs about £500 more but the annoying thing is I'm going to have to sell it anyway as my mum can't get out of it with anything resembling convenience. I feel sort of, stupid having bought it to be honest as the least I could have done is get something my mum can get in and out of!! ](*,)

maybe the seller has MOT'd it to make it more attractive to potential buyers... it's not unusual for stored cars to be started, driven (on private land or a cheeky spin up and down the street) and/or wheeled out for an annual mot.

that aside.. anything that has been sat for any length of time will definitely need at least a full fluids flush/change, a set of tyres, brakes and any/all perishable items (rubber hoses, bushes etc) checked thoroughly/replaced so it could get expensive.

good cars are out there, if you want something low miles and rot free then don't be scared to import one yourself.. the yen is @ 186/£ at the min

Rev3+, condition, condition..
Sorry. I see you have a rev2 but after having both, the 3+ is better.

Yep, having had a rev2 for 5 years and a rev3 for 2 years the rev3 is better by miles, i'd rather have a rough rev3 than a mint rev1/2. Regardless of condition you're going to throw money at it. Obviously i'm not recommending buying a complete dog here....
