Cheaper alternative to AD08?

Post by CalMac »

Need to change my tyres as the profiles are all wrong and it's exacerbating the issues I'm having with bouncy ride (and the rears are budgets, fitted by previous owner :pale:)

I'm after 205/45/16 and 225/45/16.

Toyo Proxes T1R have mixed reviews - I've used them before on my old Ford KA, and was really quite happy with them. Obviously no comparison to the MR2 though

Yoko Advan Neova AD08 - from what I've heard they're pretty top notch, but with a price to match. Kind of hoping somebody will tell me they're not all that wonderful so I can stop contemplating spending £470 on a set..

Goodyear Eagle F1 - again, I've heard good reviews but none specifically from MR2 owners.

Bridgestone, Vredestein, Michelin, Avon etc. all considered - just after a bit of feedback from those of you running a similar setup :thumleft:

Worth. Every. Penny. :thumleft:

Wet weather performance of the AD08 compared to the T1R... no comparison.

Also they are formulated to work right down to -10c. I found they were great in freezing conditions

Really? I always thought tyres like the AD08 struggle in the wet. This changes things...

I've not tried these myself, but been hearing good things about them, despite the manufacturer...

Available in the 205/45/16 you requested... with sticky tyres, I'd suggest stagger isn't all that important.

I was so surprised when I first fitted them. I'd had Yoko A539, A520, and AD07 before and they were all prettty bad in the wet.

AD08 I could launch the car in a failry sharpish fashion in moderate rain on low boost and the wheels would not spin. :thumleft:

They really inspired confidence. :)

So other than price, what's the trade off? I assume it's just the wear rate?

Yep pretty much just wear rate and price

Treadwear rating is 180, R1R is 120, R888 less than one hundred.

They do have quite a stiff sidewall, and some additional road noise, but for what amounts to a semi-slick thats to be expected.

I have 205/45/R16 & 225/45/R16 Toyo T-1R Proxes fitted, can't fault them for every day use, dry and wet grip is decent and they seem to be wearing well, they do need a little extra air pressure in them as the side walls seem a little softer than other tyres. I've not tried the AD08 tyres so can't compare them, I'm certainly not disappointed in the performance of the T-1R's.

Wear isn't a major concern for me.

Think I'm gonna go for the Yoko's then - Eagle Asymmetric 2 aren't available in rear size (225 or 235) otherwise I'd have probably paid about half for them :(

Stock pressures are 2.0bar/2.3bar, I run the T-1R's at 2.1bar/2.4bar

Would you say the slight increase in pressure is partially down to the larger diameter tyre or just to minimise sidewall flex?

I'm a little surprised people are touting the discontinuned T1Rs as a substitute for AD08s... they're in different leagues!

Track tyres are tricky to find one model that will do both front and back. But I'd be tempted to go 205/45/16 front and back with the Nankangs... or I was while I thought they were £60 from Camskill... when I realised that was the 205/55/16 price, and the 45 profile was £100 a corner, I was a little disappointed.

I fitted Eagle F1s on the rear, they are better than the old T1r's i used to run, especially in the wet.

As someone who hated T1-R's on standard wheels a few years ago, I realy cant fault my current set. Although my car is slightly overtyred on the rear.

I cant wear them out fast enough though as i'd realy like to try R1Rs or AD08R's
