Sill repair (Now with finished pictures)

Post by samgpr50 »

So I know my sills need attention. Does anyone on here repair them or has anyone got an idea what I should be paying? I have never picked up a welder so having a go is not really an option as I know I would never get the result I want. Thanks.

Sam :(

Hmmmmmmmm. Based on what I've seen I'm going to hazard a guess at anything between £500 and £1000 per side for a proper job depending on a) how bad it is and b) where you get it done. You may well find it has spread to the rear arches as well so get that boot carpet out and also get right underneath for a good prod around.

I think I only have a little surface rust as I believe they have been done at some point. Had a good prod along them tonight and feel surprisingly solid even though they look bad! I'll post photos.

again, depending on how bad it is a good repair is going to be £500ish a side.. anything less is likely to be simply cosmetic and will come back to haunt you when a big lump of filler drops out 12 months down the line

they rot from the inside out so what you can see on the surface will likely be worse once you chop it open.

hopefully you've caught it nice and early :thumleft:

edit:

looking at them pics I would get at them with one of these:

and find out what's under that stonechip paint.

when was it imported? was is undersealed/cavity waxed?

*shudder* cut it open =(

It will have to wait a couple of months I fear due to funds. I'm tempted to sand it back as I believe these are not the original sills. But if I sand and find holes that's a whole can of worms. Thank you though

Sam

Edit: Imported in 1999 I think and I have no idea about the rest sorry.

That will be bad. The thing about these cars is it has gone under the radar for so long, partly because the MOT man will just take a quick glance at the skins without realising that a bit of "surface rust" there just means that the real structural stuff inside has gone to cack and partly because it's just plain hidden in there and it seems that after so long it's caught a lot of people out. Unfortunately, given the rock-bottom value of most SW20s these days, it's often means breaking/scrapping or (if the owner is a d**k) a quick bodge job and sell it on to some poor unsuspecting person.

I paid roughly £500 a side last year and also had a few other bits tidied up at the same time as you'll probably get a better deal on other bits when you put the car in for a big jobby like both sills. Do some investigation and find out how bad it is inside. Take the boot carpet out and check in there too.

Thanks. Checked the boot and that is perfect. (was wiring the ecu the other day) I will have to strip it back and check it out. =(

Hi Sam
I had mine done both sides by Mr T, this time last year paid about £1000, expensive but just like New.

I do sill repairs metalwork-wise. And leave my painter to prep and paint.

Here's one i did recently:

Customer wanted repair panel flush welding, so no filler needed. (Inner sill was repaired in between pics).

Repair panel is trimmed to be 1mm smaller all round. Tack welds are spaced to stop heat distortion. Join was fully seam welded after last pic. Prepped and painted. Then inner sections wax-oiled.

I have a very good condition rev2 that I am breaking that has 100% genuine solid sills and I was thinking about cutting them off the car and keeping aside for a car that needs repair (when I find a suitable one).

Worth doing or not...?

Well I have started to sand and the panel looks immaculate. Looks like a bad paint job. I'm so happy. Will post photos later as I need to collect another drill to finish the job.
