[Mk2] [Turbo] Minor engine rattle....

Post by 2tmike »

On a rev3 turbo. If you gently blip the revs from 1000 to about 1500 then as the revs die back there is a slight 'tappety' rattle from the rocker cover/inlet manifold area. Any ideas?

Worn cam buckets? Pull the cover off and measure clearances, and inspect the buckets.

Sounds strange I know- but could be an exhaust leak maybe? EDIT- you said inlet side, so unlikely!

I guess so,,;((
I was half hoping there might be something in the inlet like the rev 1 t-vis

Has that got valves/flaps that could make a rattle?

It has valves, but never seen them rattle before...easy to check, unbolt the top half of the inlet manifold and have a look.

My money's on the top end though :thumleft:

EDIT: I'm talking b0ll0x...its the NA that has ACIS, you've got a turbo haven't you ](*,) ](*,)

Noise

Post by 2tmike »

The top end sounds pretty much the same as mine. I did check all valve clearances and they were in spec, admittedly towards the allowable max in most cases.
Some of the noise on mine was an exhaust blow as an earlier reply suggested and having fixed that it just sounds like noisy tappets

2tmike I did not understand, have you solved the issue on your car or just left the noisy tappets there?

In my case I had the engine rebuilt, together with the head, so the exhaust gaskets were new.
I checked the valve clearance many time too and all was in spec.
That noise looks like a mistery to me

Noise

Post by 2tmike »

Not really solved so going to live with it for a while as everything I look at checks out ok now. I'm running a 5/50 Motorsport oil and maybe a different spec or oil additive might quieten it down, but apart from that I'm out of ideas!!!
This is on an st205 celica and if I run the rev5 mr2 turbo (same spec engine) and compare, the celica is noticeably more noisy[/quote]

This symptom has occured in the past, and its been the support bearing that is on the long drive shaft. Sounds mad i know, but mines had it. It can either be worn, or the little rubber tipped screw that helps secure it can lose its tip.

It rattles in that rev range in neutral, and its basically right under the inlet manifold, and has an almost "top endy" sound to it.

Obviously it could be other things, but I'd check that area out, no harm done.

I did a little check on the support bearing and nothing seems wrong with it.. Also I couldn't find any rubber tipped screw on it..

However I put one end of a screwdriver on my ear and one on the oil pan and searched for the noise.
It is loader when I put the other end on the left side of the oil pan (looking the car from the back).
Could be a faulty internal bearing ?
