Rev3 tubby project (car mapped ready for summer )

Post by glen n »

I bought my current mr2 as a spur of the moment thing really,I had stripped my rev1 turbo and was driving a super cool punto 1.2 which wasn't exactly exiting me. I saw a red rev3 turbo going for 2k and went for a look,it had been sitting for a while and was obviously needing some work, taxed and mot done. There was a few nice mods, apexi power fc,commander and boost solenoid, blitz nur spec, apexi filter, hks bov,hks intercooler gauges on driver pillar and one in place of cigarette lighter, blitz turbo timer/boost gague, trust gear knob and short shifter. And a few mods not to my taste, staggered advans which needed a major refurb, red bucket type seats and harnesses,no bulkhead carpet.

Upon buying the car it was apparent the suspension was needing sorting out as seems normal with buying an mr2. So I did the following with the aid if htmlangel on here which made a huge difference. I also sourced som staggered lenso d1rs to replace the knackered advans

Yellow billies I sourced second hand
Trd rear top mounts
Kyb front top mounts
Replaced all drop links
Reused eibach springs
Front ball joints
Front arb bushes for poly ones
17 inch lenso d1rs 8j and 9j with Avon tyres and front spacers 3mm

Now onto the other common issue with mr2s that have been sitting, sticky calipers!! I carried out the following work to sort the brakes out

Replaced 3 calipers for refurbished ones
New drilled and grooved disks coated black
Mintex pads

I then focused on some of the engine work

Oil and filter change
Replaced dizzy and rotor arm
Greedy intercooler new red couplings and clamps plus spal fan
New hks bow
Powder coated hot pipe
Painted heatsheild for manifold
Replaced vacuum hoses
Had flexi replaced on the nur spec
Replaced cracked Aussie downpipe for a berk one

I also decided to sort the interior out

Fitted mk3 cloth seats
Fitted bulkhead carpet
Replaced centre tunnel
Fitted a cubby box as it was missing
Replaced stereo surround
Replaced gear surround and gaitor
Fitter leather door cards
Pioneer double din head unit with parrot and USB
Sub box behind seat and vibe amp
Vibe 6x9s in boxes behind drivers seat
Kenwood door speakers
Refitted jdm flare
Changed interior lights to led panels
Mounted commander on right hand vent on drivers side.
Moved blitz turbo timer to small vent under steering wheel
Replaced omp steering wheel for something round

Image

Most recently I replaced the headlights for crystal clear ones and xenon bulbs
Fitted an oil catch can
Removed bits and bobs relating to the air con
Led number plate bulbs
Bought single side vents
Bought underseal to redo the whole car

Went on the highland drive and the car was spot on exept slight rubbing on the suspension which 3mm spacers
Sorted

The car is currently in having the passenger sill repaired and painted, along with the front bumper, both wings, bonnet and around the windscreen, then I'll be giving it a good polish next week.

got the car back from the body shop and the front end shows up how poor the roof and a few other bits are now looking so its going back in for a full respray including the front end again. So my next work will consist of

Quarter windows out (have mint replacements)
Spoiler off
Rear lights out
Side vents off (have single vents to go back on
Boot lid off
Engine lid and inspection panels off
Bonnet off
Doors and mirrors off
Windscreen out for replacement
Fuel cap off
Possibly Ariel removed and smoothed over

I'll replace as many of the seals around the bodywork as I can afford,I know some are crazy money though.

Started work on the car in prep for getting resprayed today. Removed the real lights and centre panel, bolt lid and spoiler, engine lid and inspection panels, and the side vents. Both quarter windows are out and the seals on top of the doors are off. Doors and bonnet will come off on Monday and whatever I've forgotten. I'm having the passenger sill cut out and replaced and the ariel hole smoothed over.

I was going to sell it, got the front painted but the roof and boot was starting to get really faded and was pretty noticeable,so just decided it get the whole car painted and keep it. By the time I sorted it all out for selling I'd have made nothing. Means ill make the highland drive again next year, plus I'm heading to JAE for the first time.

How's the racing going? And how's the tubby you were working on?

Racings going good dude. Obviously I'm at the back end all the time but every race puts a massive smile on my face :D

The tubby is coming on good too dude just a bit slower than I wanted which is mainly due to the racing lol. Should be running and ready for mapping in a week or so :thumleft:

Windscreen out next and off for the sill to be sorted. I'll get the single side vents ready for painting and choose what red I'm going for over the next few days

She'll be lovely when she's done!

Don't know what red I would go for though. Most reds look a bit normal. Rosso?

I think I'm going for super red 5,I was looking at the Rosso reds but thought it may be best staying a Toyota colour.

Popped in to see the car earlier and the passenger sill is finished

From this

As it as just now

Had a good look at the drivers sill and I'm having a section cut out as I can see a few bubbles starting to show. The ariel hole is welded up and smoothed, rust bubbles on top of sill inside drivers door cut out and welded also.

Good job on the sills dude, very common these days for MK2s to go rusty here.

I just never realised how bad the passenger sill was,I'll make sure the drivers side is taken right back and repaired before painting now that I've seen the bubbles. This is going to be a mad rush for JAE! need to prep my single side vents, fit black roof lining, visors etc. make brackets and fit my leather celica seats, fit tein springs, various hoses in the engine bay. As well as put the car back together before the 10th as its hopefully going in for a wet sand and polish and engine bay detail. There was meant to be a mapping session on between but seems unlikely now.

Yeah I'll strip the other parts once its been round to the welders to have the drivers sill looked at,saw a small bubble so may aswell have it sorting before the car gets painted. I don't think it will be quite as thorough a job as yours!

Just staying red,I had considered going Rosso red but Toyota super red 5 is what I'll go with. The only thing I'll need to get replaced will be my tbar glass as its a bit tired looking,I've got quarter windows,a pillar seals, seals for top of doors, replacement rear lights, new side vents and new windscreen going in. I would have liked a colour change but don't have time to strip the engine or anything like that.
