[Mk2] [NA] I am a dipstick

Post by Racer7 »

So I thought I'd check the oil level on the car today since I had the light pop up.

Took the dipstick out and heard something drop.

Looking to put the dipstick back I'm and I can't find the tube or hole to put it in!

Can I drive anywhere writhe the car like this? Can't see xxxx in my garage so want get the car out and jack it up in case it was the tubing that dropped.

Hahaha, there was a topic about this a few months ago.

General consensus is no we can't guarantee it's fine to run around with a broken dipstick tube. It'll possibly be okay but it's obviously at risk...

Why not? Is it that something may have dropped into the sump?

My car didn't have a dipstick tube in it when I bought it and have been driving around fine for 2 months now. (I've got one on the way though obviously)

Previous case it had snapped off at the engine. If you've just lost the top of the plastic I guess it'd be fine.

The whole tube is missing.

Is the concern about leaks? I haven't really looked to see if the hole has been plugged or not.

It's a way into the oil sump for crap, and an easy way for oil to get out, I wouldn't drive without one!

I guess mine must be plugged then. At least I hope it is, I've done over 1000 miles without it!

Ok, I'm going to not drive without it in.

Does anyone have a picture of where the dipstick should go at the point of entry on the engine itself?

I am assuming that it is the guide tubing that has come out of mine when I took it out. I'm hoping I can at least sorrt of plug it by just sticking the dipstick back in (though the moulded end might actually just wave about with no tube to plug in to).

Also - I'm due to get my MOT so will be booking one at a council run test centre near Pacific Works (about a 50mile drive). Will having an AWOL dipstick cause me problems?

I managed to find the metal tubing part that is deeper into the engine bay. Had to do my best superman impression to fumble around and find it so I think I'm good. But this being an MR2 just moves me on to the next problem...

I think Blue2UK might be more in need of the replacement!

According to my grease monkey I've (apparently) got one on the way. I think it must be coming the long way around from Japan though!

A little advice to those who, like me, thought they didn't have a dipstick or tube in their rev2 3sge and so order new ones from Japan.

Have a look under the exhaust manifold heat shield first. ](*,)

Mine passed MOT without it.

...Yea, MOT won't check that. You should get it fixed, you should keep contamination out at all costs. The cleaner you keep an engine (generally) the better / longer it will run. It's in your own best interests.

This is what happend to me. My dipstick has a bit of hard molded plastic that I assumed was the actual tube. So when I pulled the whole thing out I then couldn't see where it came from!

As said, do your best superman impression, lying across the rear quarter drivers side then have a feel around and hopefully you'll find it!

Just mind your fingers if your engine is still hot as mine was!
